Women’s Basketball Come Away With A Close One At William & Mary, 74-72

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The University of Delaware women's basketball team set their sights on putting one in the win column in Williamsburg, Va. In their lone regular-season meeting, the Blue Hens (11-8, 4-4 CAA) captured the 74-72 road victory in dramatic fashion over William & Mary (10-10, 5-4 CAA) Sunday afternoon to snap its two-game skid while stopping the Tribe's winning streak at four games inside Kaplan Arena.
Delaware jumped out to a quick 7-2 ead, highlighted by a three-pointer by Makayla Pippin, and held a 12-11 lead with 3:29 to play. William & Mary took their first lead of the game with under three minutes remaining and ended the quarter on a 8-2 spurt to finish the opening quarter up 19-14.
The Blue Hens pulled within two points with 9:09 showing on the second quarter clock, thanks to a pair of Demi Burdick freebies, 19-18. The Tribe responded with an 11-2 spurt capped by Sydeny Wagner's three-point play to build the double-digit advantage, 30-20. Delaware had a sense of urgency with 5:14 left to play and put together a crucial 16-5 run, headlined by Kharis Idom's seven second-quarter points, that would make it a 35-all game heading into the break.
Delaware took the six point lead after Idom drilled a three-pointer at the 7:30 mark in the third. Nakiyah Mays-Prince pushed the lead back up to five at 48-43 with another made three-pointer, but the Tribe went on a 10-0 run to take a five-point lead of their own. Two Pippin free throws and a layup by Klarke Sconiers cut the lead to one heading into the fourth.
The seesaw battle commenced in the final quarter as both teams fought hard for the advantage. With the scoreboard reading 66-all 4:21 left, Idom connected from deep to push the Blue Hens lead to three, 69-66. The Tribe then used a 6-2 run which was capped by Wagner's jumper, to regain the lead for the last time on the afternoon, 72-71. Coming to save the day was Sconiers as she soared in for the offensive rebound, drew a foul and then took care of business at the line sinking two, to put Delaware up for good, 73-72. Smalls drains a free throw with 27 seconds left, 74-72, with the Tribe having the last possession. Pippin, doing what post players do in protecting the paint and sent away Wagner's driving layup for the Blue Hens to secure the win.
Sconiers led Delaware with a team-high 18 points (7-9 FG), 12 of which came in the final quarter. Idom added 15 points (5-11 FG, 4-7 3PT) and added five assists, while Smalls had 11 points and nine rebounds. Cousins scored 10 points (4-7 FG) to give the Blue four double-digit scorers.
Wagner paced William & Mary with 33 points (13-13 FT), three assists and two steals. Riley Casey followed with 12 points and five assists.
Delaware shot 43.9 percent (25-57) from the field, 40.9 percent (9-22) from beyond the arc, and 78.9 percent (15-10) from the free throw line. William & Mary connected on 36.4 percent (24-66) from the field, 30.4 percent (7-23) from three-point territory, and 85.0 percent (17-20) from the charity stripe. The Blue Hens outplayed the Tribe in rebounds (44-33), steals (10-9), blocks (2-1), and second chance points (14-7).
