RICHMOND, Va. – The Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) revealed its 2023-24 women's basketball preseason coaches' poll and All-CAA team Thursday afternoon ahead of hosting its annual virtual media day. Ahead of the 2023-24 campaign, the Blue Hens were picked to finish fourth (123 votes) while fifth-year center Klarke Sconiers and senior forward Chloe Wilson landed on the Preseason All-CAA Honorable Mention list.
Sconiers made an impact in her first year in the Blue & Gold uniform. The Queens, N.Y. native started in 24 of her 28 appearances and averaged 12.6 points, 4.4 rebounds and 1.9 blocks per game. Sconiers put together four 20+ point performances this season, headlined by a career-best performance of 29 points and tying her career-high 11 rebounds in Delaware's 79-67 road win at Lehigh. She scored in double figures in 20 games including an 18 points performance in the Blue Hens' B1G win over Illinois (Nov. 26). Sconiers' performance on the court earned her the right to call herself a third-team All-CAA selection and was tabbed CAA Player of the Week once during the regular season.
Wilson, a senior transfer from FDU, comes to Newark after averaging 17.2 points, 7.4 rebounds and 2.3 assists per contest to earn First Team All-NEC last season. During her three seasons suiting up for the Knights, Wilson has scored 1,007 career points and made 57 starts in her 79 appearances. Last season, Freeport, N.Y. native scored a career-high 32 points against Central Connecticut State on Feb. 11 and pulled down a career-best 13 rebounds against Wagner on Feb. 18.
The 2023 CAA tournament finalist Towson was selected as the favorite to hoist the conference championship, garnering 163 votes (9 first-place votes). Following the Tigers in the number two slot is Stony Brook with 139 votes (two first-place votes) and Northeastern was projected to finish third with 138 votes (two first-place votes). Delaware and Charleston (117, one first-place vote) round out the top five. With Monmouth (115) defending their title sitting in sixth, Drexel (104), North Carolina A&T (103), William & Mary (75), new conference member Campbell (68), Elon (56), Hofstra (33), Hampton (28) and UNCW (21) were selected to finish seventh through 14th, respectively.
