Volleyball Extends Win Streak To 13 With Win In Regular Season Finale Over Elon

ELON, N.C. -Â University of Delaware volleyball defeated Elon (19-25, 25-18, 25-21, 27-25) in the regular season finale on Nov. 12, 2023. The win was Delaware's 13th in a row, one shy of tying a program record, and gave them their 22nd win of the season. Delaware will be the No. 2 seed in next week's CAA Conference Tournament.Â

HEN HIGHLIGHTS
- Lani Mason had a game-high 21 kills, hit .333, recorded 12 digs, and had four aces.
- Kirah Johnson recorded 11 kills and hit. 429 with four blocks.
- Ezgi Basaranlar had 48 assists, two aces, two blocks, and six digs.
- Savannah Seemans recorded 11 kills and six digs.Â
- Madelyn Grunza recorded five kills and five blocks.
- Gha'Naye Whitfield-Moss had two kills and six blocks.Â
- Eileen Gex had 16 digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST SET
- After the score was tied 3-3, Elon scored three straight points and led the rest of the set. Delaware cut their deficit to one five separate times, with Mason recording a kill to make the score 14-13.Â
- Kills by Seemans, Basaranlar, Johnson, and Mason helped bring the score to 21-19, Elon scored four straight points to take the opening set.Â
- Mason had four kills in the first set while Basaranlar had nine assists. Gex had six digs.Â
- Delaware took a 7-1 lead in the second set, highlighted by three aces by Mason and three block assists by Grunza and Whitfied-Moss. A kill by Johnson and another block by Whitfield-Moss helped Delaware take a 15-7 lead.Â
- Elon began to battle back and cut the lead to 19-16, but back-to-back kills by Seemans and Mason helped Delaware regain control. Three-straight points by Delaware, including another block assist by Whitfield-Moss and Grunza and an ace by Basaranlar, finished off set two and evened the match at one.Â
- Mason and Seemans had three kills in the set, while Gex had six digs.Â
- Elon went up 12-7 to begin the third set. Delaware scored seven of the next eight points and took a 14-13 advantage. Seemans had two kills during the stretch.Â
- With the score 18-17, Delaware, the Blue Hens rattled off points in six of the next eight rallies. Mason had a kill and an ace and Grunza, Whitfield-Moss, and Johnson each had kills to put Delaware up 24-19. Johnson finished the set off with another kill, giving Delaware a 2-1 lead.Â
- Seemans had Johnson had four kills each, and Basaranlar had 14 assists. Mason added six digs.Â
- Mason exploded in the fourth set, helping Delaware to an 11-8 lead with five kills early on. Elon would eventually take a 17-15 lead after scoring four straight points and extended the lead to 21-17.
- Anna Logan Gillens provided a spark for Delaware, subbing in and recording a kill and a block with Johnson in successive plays. Another kill by Logan Gillens and an Elon attack error brought the score to 22-21, Elon. Mason then took over the remainder of the set. With Delaware down 23-21, Mason recorded five kills, helping Delaware tie the set at 23 and avoid set losses by evening the score at 24 and 25 before putting Delaware up by one, Grunza recorded the final kill of the night to give Delaware a 27-25 victory and a 3-1 match win.Â
- Â Mason had 11 kills on 16 attempts in the set, and Basaranlar had 18 assists.Â
GAME NOTES
- Mason recorded her fourth game this season with at least 20 kills. She now has 1,485 career kills.
- Basaranlar recorded her ninth game this season with at least 40 assists. She upped her career assist total to 3,839.Â
- Johnson had her seventh game this season reaching double-digit kills and a .400 hitting percentage.Â
- Gex recorded her ninth game this season with at least 15 digs. She now has 850 career digs.Â
- Whitfield-Moss had 10 total blocks during the weekend and 17 in her last three matches.Â
- Grunza had her fourth game this season with at least five total blocks.
- Delaware's 22 wins are their most in a season since winning 26 in 2010.Â
- Delaware's 13 consecutive wins and 13 consecutive wins against CAA opponents is their longest since winning a program record 14 straight from Oct. 3-Nov. 21, 2010.Â
- Delaware's streak of 12 sets won in a row was snapped. It was their second 12+ set win streak of the season, as they previously won 14 straight sets from Oct. 1-Oct. 15.Â
- Delaware has a road record of 10-1. It's their most road wins in a season since 2007, when they went 10-4 in road games.Â
