Men's Lacrosse Opens Season at Lafayette

NEWARK, Del. – The reigning Colonial Athletic Association champions kick off the 2023 season with a road game against Lafayette on Saturday, Feb. 11 in Easton, Pa.

SCOUTING DELAWARE

Delaware enters the 2023 season after one of the best seasons in program history. The 13-wins is the most since the 2006-07 season, won a share of the CAA regular season championship, won the CAA tournament, and defeated Robert Morris and No. 2 Georgetown in the NCAA Tournament.
UD enters the season ranked No. 12 in the Inside Lacrosse and USILA poll, as well as No. 14 in the USA Lacrosse Magazine poll.
Two-time CAA Defensive Player of the Year Owen Grant returns to anchor the defense. Grant owns the program record for caused turnovers in a season (35) and caused turnovers in a career (87). He was named preseason Defensive Player of the Year
The Blue Hens return three of their top point scorers on offense in JP Ward, Tye Kurtz, and Mike Robinson. The three combined for 145 goals and 207 points a season ago.
Matt Kilkeary returns to the net for the Blue Hens. He led the CAA in goals against average (10.31), and save percentage (.532).
Delaware had five players who were named to CAA All-Preseason: Owen Grant, JP Ward, Mike Robinson, Clay Miller, and Matt Kilkeary. Tye Kurtz was recognized as an honorable mention.
The Blue Hens welcome eight freshmen to the squad: Rowan Marsell, Finn Morgan, Brendan Powers, Luke Galgano, Patrick Gillin, Troon Houlton, Franky Fix, and Michael Straub.

SCOUTING LAFAYETTE

Lafayette opened the season last Saturday with a 21-11 loss against Penn State. Charlie Cunniffe led the way for the Leopards, scoring two goals, and adding three assists. John Mathes added two goals.
In 2022, the Leopards finished the season 4-11. One of their four wins came against CAA foe Drexel in a 13-11 victory.
Offensively, the Leopards return two of their top players: Cunniffe, and Peter Lehman. Lehman led the Leopards in goals (34), assists (21), and points (55). He was also the Patriot League Rookie of the Year in 2021. Cunniffe was second in points (39), assists (19), and was fourth in goals (20).
2023 will be head coach Patrick Meyers fifth season with the Leopards. He has an 8-40 overall record. Saturday will be Meyers' first matchup against the Blue Hens as the Leopards' head coach.

MATCHUP HISTORY

Saturday will be the first matchup between the Blue Hens and Leopards since 2014.
The Blue Hens boast a 40-1 record all-time against Lafayette, including a 32-game win streak.
Delaware is 20-0 on the road against the Leopards.
Lafayette's lone win against the Blue Hens was during the 1957-58 season.
