Pippin Shines As Women’s Basketball Rolls Past UNCW, 83-47

NEWARK, Del. - The University of Delaware women's basketball team put on a show in front of the Bob Carpenter Center fans of 1,209 when hosting UNCW (4-18, 1-10 CAA) Friday evening as part of the Black History Month Legacy Game. The Blue Hens (13-9, 6-5 CAA) put together another game that featured five double-digit scorers headlined by Makayla Pippin's career night that solidified the double-digit 83-47 home victory over the Seahawks. Tonight's victory extends Delaware's winning streak to seven games against UNCW while the 36 point win was their largest margin of victory since defeating Chestnut Hill 87-48 in last year's season opener on Nov. 9. 2021.
The opening eight minutes saw UNCW get in as close as one point thanks to Evan Miller's pair of freebies, 13-12. Delaware then responded by scoring six-unanswered points, all coming off the hands of Pippin to close out the quarter with the 18-12 lead.
After the Seahawks pulled within four (22-18) with 7:14 remaining, Michelle Ojo laid in two to kickstart a dominating 19-7 spurt for the Blue Hens to build the 18-point cushion, 43-25, heading to the break. Delaware shot an impressive 71.43 percent (10-14) from the field and was perfect from deep (1-1).
Delaware maintained the double-digit lead throughout the second half. The Blue Hens watched its lead balloon to 30 points courtesy of Rebecca Demeke's triple at the 4:42 mark in the third quarter. Delaware still applied pressure in the fourth and pushed their advantage to 30+ points on three separate occasions with the rookie Nakiyah Mays-Prince's steal leading into an easy two, extended the lead and settled the game-high final 83-47.
Pippin highlighted the Blue Hens with career-high 25 points (9-15 FG) and 10 rebounds, including going 7-7 from the field to begin the game. Ojo scored 14 points (7-11 FG). while Mays-Prince added 11 points (5-8 FG). Cousins stuffed the stat sheet with 11 points, seven rebounds, six assists, and zero turnovers and Demeke scored 10 points (4-7 FG, 2-4 3PT).
UNCW was led by Carrie Gross' 15 points and Evan Miller's 13 points.
Delaware shot 47.2 percent (34-72) from the field, 29.4 percent (5-17) from beyond the arc, and 66.7 percent (10-15) from the free throw line. UNCW connected on 24.2 percent (15-62) from the field, 40.0 percent (4-10) from three-point territory, and 61.9 percent (13-21) from the charity stripe. The Blue Hens outplayed the Seahawks in rebounds (49-42), assists (14-8), steals (14-5), blocks (5-1), points off turnovers (20-8), second chance points (12-4) bench points (35-7), points in the paint (48-18), and fast break points (14-4). Delaware's 83 points tied their season-high in a game this year, having also done so against Illinois on Nov. 26. The 47 points allowed by the Blue Hens were also a season-best.
