HOUSTON, Texas – The University of Delaware softball team dropped a tight one on Sunday afternoon, falling 1-0 to the University of Houston at the Houston Invitational. With the setback, the Blue Hens drop to 4-1 on the season.
Emily Winburn fired a complete game in the circle, allowing just one run on five hits while striking out two. Hanna Garber led the UD offense with three hits, including a double.
The Blue Hens had a runner on base in each of the first three innings, including getting a runner to third base twice. Their best scoring opportunity came in the top of the second when Morgan Olynyk led off with a triple to right field, but she was stranded there after three-consecutive strikeouts.
The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning when the Cougars took a 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly.
Katie Scheivert reached base in the top of the seventh, but the Blue Hens could not drive home the tying run.
Delaware will return to action next weekend when the squad travels to Columbia, South Carolina for the Carolina Classic. The Blue Hens will play Western Carolina and South Carolina on Friday before closing out the weekend against Campbell and George Washington.
