2/23/2023 5:26:00 PM | Track & Field
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – All sights were set at Virginia Beach Sports Center in Virginia Beach, Va. as the University of Delaware track & field team headed down South to compete in the 2023 CAA Indoor Track & Field Championships Feb. 22-23. In its first championship of its kind, the Blue Hens finished tied for sixth place with 51 points while Elon was crowned champion after totaling 129.83 points. Hampton (121.33), Northeastern (93), North Carolina A&T (71) and William & Mary (58) rounded out the top five. The Blue Hens racked up four medals: one gold, two silver and one bronze headlined by an impressive performance by Aja Davis.
The 60m dash was all about Davis and the Blue & Gold. Entering the event with a previous program record and second place seed time of 7.48, Davis shaved off .03 milliseconds in the preliminary round on Wednesday crossing the finish line with a new program record time of 7.45 (first place). Davis carried the same momentum into Championship Thursday and posted the same program record time to lace her neck in gold and be crowned champion of the 60m dash.
The Blue Hens opened up day one of the championship with a strong outing in the pole vault. Bridget Joyce entered the event with a mark of 3.53m and seeded in 11th place and then obliterated the mark with a PR of 3.70m to capture silver for the Blue Hens.
Anticipation was high in the weight throw as Chioma Njoku was set to lead the way for the Blue Hens on Wednesday. After tossing a program record and second place seed mark of 20.15m, Njoku's second toss of 19.35m proved to be good enough to claim silver medals.
The 5000m race was the last individual running event left on deck and Autumn Sands was all over it. Sands closed out day one for the Blue hens by taking bronze with a time of 17:01.09.
WHATS NEXT
The Blue Hens is set to open the outdoor season on Saturday, Mar. 4 at the UNCW Invitational, hosted by UNCW in Wilmington, N.C.
