Softball Falls Twice to Open UNCG Invitational

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The University of Delaware softball team dropped a pair of games on Friday afternoon to open play at the UNCG Invitational. The Blue Hens fell 11-0 to Indiana before dropping a 4-3 decision to UNCG to slip to 4-7 on the season.
Game One: Indiana 11, Delaware 0
Indiana used four home runs to power past the Blue Hens.
The Hoosiers scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning before using a seven-run fourth inning to complete the scoring.
Katie Scheivert had Delaware's lone hit, while Julz Garber and Chloe Blantz each drew a walk.
Game Two: UNCG 4, Delaware 3
The Blue Hens outhit UNCG 7-3, but came up short in the run column.
Hanna Garber led the offense with two hits, including a double and home run. Kiara Mills was on base twice with a single and a walk. In the circle, Taylor Wroten allowed two runs in 4.1 innings of relief with two strikeouts. Emily Winburn also fired 1.1 innings of hitless relief with a strikeout.
UNCG quickly grabbed a quick 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first.
In the third, the Blue Hens loaded the bases with one out after a couple of hits and a walk. Blantz hit a hard grounder that was mishandled by the shortstop, allowing Brittney Mendoza to score to make it a 2-1 game.
After the Spartans scored twice to make it 4-1, Delaware quickly answered with two more runs in the top of the fifth inning. Jayla Brooks led off with a single before Hanna Garber launched her first home run of the season over the fence in right-center field to make it a one-run game.
Delaware got the tying run in scoring position later that inning, but was unable to knot the score.
Delaware will continue play at the UNCG Invitational on Saturday. The Blue Hens are scheduled to play UConn at 11 a.m. before all four teams will be seeded for semifinal play later in the afternoon.
