BOSTON, Mass. - The University of Delaware women's basketball team headed up North to Boston, Mass. to face Northeastern (15-11, 10-5 CAA) in a heightened CAA matchup Friday evening inside Cabot Center. It was a tale of two halves as the Blue Hens (14-12, 7-8 CAA) suffered a 70-61 road setback to the Huskies.
With the scoreboard reading 3-0 in favor of Northeastern 28 seconds into the opening period, both teams went on a scoring drought over the next 4:58. Klarke Sconiers finished off a three-point play to put the Blue Hens on the board which ignited a 14-5 spurt that was capped by Rebecca Demeke's triple. The Huskies trimmed the deficit to five with 31 seconds remaining before Sconiers knocked down a jumper to build Delaware's seven-point cushion, 18-11, to close out the quarter.
Delaware remained in control in the second period even though Northeastern wouldn't go away quietly pulling within three points, 24-21, with 5:31 left. Seeing the action for the first time since Jan. 29, 2023 was Kharis Idom, who knocked down a crucial three-pointer at the 5:11 mark and Demeke followed right behind her scoring four-unanswered points for the Blue Hens to claim the 10 point lead, 31-21. The Huskies brought the game back within single digits but that didn't stop Makayla Pippin connecting from deep in the final three seconds, sending Delaware into the break with the 10-point lead, 37-27.
The Blue Hens extended its lead to a game-high 14 points, thanks to Pippin scoring four-straight points, 41-27. Then the tide changed to Black & Red with 8:43 showing on the third quarter clock as the Huskies outscored Delaware 25-2 to regain the lead for good, 52-43. Delaware had a little more gas in the tank in the fourth quarter and was able to get in as close as six on three separate occasions, the last one coming off the hands of Sconiers' freebies at the 2:23 mark, 66-60. Northeastern remained in the driver's seat, scoring four of the game's final five points to settle the 70-61 final.
Delaware was paced by four double-digit scorers. The 11-point trio of Pippin (eight rebounds, one steal), Demeke and Sconiers led the way for the Blue Hens while Idom followed behind with 10 points in her return.
JaMiya Braxton finished with a game-high 22 points in Northeastern's win. Derin Erdogan and Gemima Motema (eight rebounds, four steals) both poured in 14 points while Deja Bristol chipped in 13 points off the pine.
Delaware shot 35 percent (21-60) from the field, 33.3 percent (7-21) from the beyond the arc, and 85.7 percent (12-14) from the free throw line. Northeastern connected on 44.3 percent (27-61) from the field, 23.1 percent (3-13) from three-point territory, and 81.3 percent (13-16) from the charity stripe. The Blue Hens held a +8 rebound margin (41-33) over the Huskies while scoring 14 second chance points off of 16 offensive rebounds. Delaware outplayed Northeastern in bench points (37-17) while the Huskies led the way in assists (14-11), blocks (4-1), steals (10-8), fast break points (15-5), points in the paint (34-20) and scored 20 points off of 24 Blue Hen miscues.
