Women's Basketball Game Preview: Northeastern & Stony Brook

BOSTON, Mass. – With four games left in the regular season, Delaware will be looking to climb up the CAA standing with two games on deck this weekend. First, the Blue Hens will travel to Boston, Mass. for a showdown against Northeastern Friday, Feb. 24 and then return to the Big Apple to face new conference foe Stony Brook on Sunday, Feb. 26. Opening tip for Friday's battle starts at 7 p.m. and Sunday's showdown is slated for a 2 p.m. start.

Up Next: Delaware will return to the First State next Thursday, Mar. 2 for its home finale against North Carolina A&T inside Bob Carpenter Center at 11 a.m. as part of the Education Day. The Blue Hens will then close out the regular-season on the road in Virginia and face new CAA foe Hampton inside Convocation Center at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Mar. 4.

What You Need to Know:
- Delaware last hit the hardwood last Sunday, Feb. 19, playing host to Drexel. The Blue Hens suffered a 67-55 setback to the Dragons to complete the regular-season sweep.
- The statline vs. Drexel: Tara Cousins paced Delaware with 13 points, five rebounds and two steals. Rebecca Demeke and Klarke Sconiers (two blocks) followed with nine points while Jewel Smalls pulled down 10 rebounds.
- Games played through Feb. 20, Delaware as a unit ranks 35th in field goal percentage defense (36.7) and 40th in defensive rebounds (28.1) among the national leaders. Around the CAA, the Blue Hens lead the way in field goal percentage defense, defensive rebounds per game and rebounds per game. The squad ranks in the top five in blocks per game (2nd, 3.4), three-point percentage (2nd, 33.8), field goal percentage (4th, 41.7), rebound margin (4th, 2.2)assists per game (5th, 12.7), free throw attempts per game (5th, 15.88), scoring margin (5th, 2.3), steals per game (5th, 7.9), three-point attempts per game (5th, 18.1), three-point percentage defense (5th, 31.5), three pointers per game (5th, 6.1) and winning percentage (5th, 56.0).
- Smalls ranks 20th in three-point attempts (200), 31st in three pointers per game (2.68) and 38th in three-pointers (67) among the NCAA while leading the way in three-point attempts among the CAA. Smalls also ranks fourth in steals (49), three-pointers and three-pointers per game and fifth in three-point attempts. Makayla Pippin ranks fourth in rebounds per game (7.9) and rebounds (197) while Sconiers ranks second in blocks (39) and third in blocks per game (1.70).
AGAINST NORTHEASTERN
- This will be the 65th time in program history that Delaware and Northeastern will be meeting, with the Blue Hens holding the 47-17 all-time record and a 23-13 mark in Boston. The Blue Hens will enter Friday's matchup looking to complete the regular-season sweep and extend the winning streak against the Huskies to nine games.
- Delaware and Northeastern met earlier this month, Feb. 5, where the Blue Hens captured the 77-67 home win over the Huskies. UD was led by six Blue Hens scoring in double figures headlined by a career-best 14 points (4-7 FG, 5-7 FT) coming off the rookie Nakiyah Mays-Prince's hands. Mays-Prince added seven assists, six rebounds and three steals to her statline. Cousins followed with 14 points (6-10 FG, 1-2 3FG) and three steals while Michelle Ojo poured in 13 points (6-11 FG) and pulled down five rebounds off the bench. Demi Burdick added 12 points, five rebounds, two assists and a block in her first-career start in the Blue & Gold. Smalls (three steals) and Demeke (4-7 FG, 2-3 3FG) poured in 10 points each.
- The last time Delaware played Northeastern inside Cabot Center was last season with the Blue Hens completing the regular-season sweep, capturing the 66-63 road victory on Feb. 11, 2022 behind Cousins' career-best 19 points (7-of-11 FG, 5-of-7 3FG). The shining moment of that game was Cousins knocking in a clutch game-winning jumper with 18 seconds left to secure the 66-63 final.
- Northeastern is currently on a four-game winning streak after claiming the 59-52 home win over Hofstra last Sunday, Feb. 19. Gemima Motema paced Northeastern with a team-high 16 points and four steals. Derin Erdogan also tallied double-digits with 10 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists. JaMiya Braxton and Deja Bristol chipped in as well for the Huskies with nine points apiece.
AGAINST STONY BROOK
- This will be the fourth time in program history, the first time ever in conference play that Delaware and Stony Brook will be meeting. The Blue Hens are undefeated against the Seawolves, winning three-straight games while holding a 2-0 mark in Stony Brook, N.Y.
- The last time Delaware and Stony Brook met was 15 years ago on Dec. 28, 2008. The Blue Hens captured the dominating 70-43 win in Los Angeles, California as part of Loyola Marymount Holiday Classic.
- The last time out for Stony Brook was last Sunday, Feb. 19 on the road against UNCW where the Seawolves extended their winning streak to three games with the 64-46 win. Gigi Gonzalez led the way with 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the floor and 4-of-6 shooting from three-point range. Sherese Pittman dropped 18 points and tied a team-high with nine rebounds on the afternoon. Pittman shot 6-of-15 from the field and 6-of-8 from the free-throw line. Annastasia Warren added 11 points and four rebounds. She shot an efficient 4-of-8 from the field in the win.
- Stony Brook will remain inside the comforts of Island Federal Arena and welcome Hampton on Friday before playing host to the Blue Hens on Sunday as part of their Senior Day festivities.
