Ray, Davis Record Double-Doubles, Men’s Basketball Wins Third Straight to Clinch Sixth Seed in CAA Tournament

ELON, N.C. – Five players scored in double figures as Delaware (16-15, 8-10 CAA) earned its third-straight victory and clinched the sixth seed in the CAA Tournament with a 70-54 win at Elon (8-23, 6-12) on Saturday.
The game went into the first media timeout all knotted up at five apiece with Jyáre Davis tallying four of the Hens' points. Elon would go ahead by as many as nine before Delaware hit 4-of-5 field goals heading into the under-four media timeout to put make it a 29-27 game. The Hens would tie the game and then a last-second Jameer Nelson Jr. triple would send UD into the break with a 34-31 lead. In total, the Blue & Gold ended the first period on an 18-6 run over the final 7:06.
Both teams shot 50-percent from the field in the opening stanza, with Delaware connecting on one more three than Elon. UD capitalized with 11 points off of seven Phoenix' turnovers, compared to just two points off three Blue Hen' giveaways.
Nelson Jr. led all scorers with 11 points at the half, to extend his double-digit streak to 27 and fifth-longest in program history.
The second half started with a 7-3 margin for the good guys with a pair of triples by LJ Owens. Elon would pull as close as five the rest of the way before a 16-7 margin over the final 6:24 to secure the victory.
Nelson Jr. would finish with a game-high 22 points on a 7-of-14 shooting performance. His 22 points, pushed him past Aaron Estrada to be the CAA's leading scorer with 20.5 ppg.
Jyáre Davis and Christian Ray each recorded the necessary amount of points and rebounds in the second half to become the first Delaware teammates to record double-doubles in the same game since Dylan Painter & Justyn Mutts did so on Jan. 23, 2020 at Hofstra.
Nelson Jr. was joined by Owens (13), Ray (12), Davis (11) and Johnny McCoy (10) in double figures.
Delaware heads to Washington D.C. for the CAA Tournament as the No. 6 seed and will take on No. 11 Northeastern on Saturday at 8:30 p.m. from the Entertainment and Sports Arena.
