Men’s Basketball Survives Overtime Effort in Second Round of CAA Tournament; Take On Towson Sunday Night
3/5/2023 12:16:00 AM | Men's Basketball
WASHINGTON – Despite needing overtime to do so, Delaware men's basketball (17-15, 8-10 CAA) fought for a 77-74 win against No. 11 Northeastern (10-20, 6-12 CAA) to earn its fourth-consecutive CAA Tournament victory and fourth in a row this season.
It was nearly back-and-forth before the Hens pulled ahead 24-19. Northeastern responded with six-straight points to go up 25-24 at the under-eight media stoppage with 7:30 on the clock. The run would be extended to 12-2 as Northeastern pushed the lead to 31-26. Delaware would take a 12-6 advantage into the break for a 38-37 lead.
Jameer Nelson Jr. led all scorers with 15 first-half points, including shooting 3-of-4 from deep. Christian Ray and Jyáre Davis each chipped in six points.
Delaware had the significant advantage in three-pointers, shooting at a 54.5 percent rate from three to go with 46.7 percent overall. Northeastern had the shooting advantage at 55.2 percent, but just 1-of-9 from three.
The Blue & Gold started the second half with a 7-0 run to go up by eight. After some resistance by the Huskies, the Hens turned it into a 12-point lead at 53-41 with 15:49 left in regulation. A 15-6 margin for the Huskies over 5:55 made it a one-possession game at 59-56 with the clock at 9:44. It wouldn't be until the last four seconds that Northeastern would tie the game at 72 apiece to send it to overtime.
The overtime frame was a tooth-and-nail fight as neither side capitalized on the defensive stops it had. However, Delaware made some important baskets, including a heavily-contested layup by Nelson Jr. to put the Hens in front for good.
Davis notched his second-consecutive double-double, tying his career-high with 14 rebounds to go with 21 points. His seven offensive rebounds were the highest for any Blue Hen since he did so last season against James Madison on Feb. 14, 2022.
Nelson Jr. joined Davis with 28 points, the first time two Blue Hens did so since Nelson and Davis did it at Drexel on Jan. 21.
Ray rounded out the trio of double-figure scorers with 11 points.
This was the first overtime game in the CAA Tournament for Delaware since the semifinals against Hofstra on 3/11/19.
The Hens will be pitted against No. 3 Towson Sunday at 8:30 p.m.
