NEWARK, Del. – Delaware wrapped up their opening four-game homestand with an emphatic 18-9 win over Old Dominion on Saturday. The Blue Hens had 26 draw controls, a new program record and equaling Virginia's, Butler's, and UMBC's game-high in the NCAA this season. Danielle Livornese recorded 12 of the draw controls, tying the Delaware program record.
"It was a great win for our program and an incredible day for our draw group," head coach Amy Altig said. "So proud of this whole team and the resiliency we showed today. Lots of people contributing all over the field in a lot of amazing ways."
Twelve different players scored for the Blue Hens, with four players scoring multiple goals, highlighted by a career-high four by Livornese. Delaney McDaniel contributed with six assists to go with her two goals scored, while McKenzie Didio had the first multi-goal game of her career. Kellie Ann Matey and Lizzie Yurchak scooped up three ground balls each, while four different players caused two turnovers. The Blue Hens finished with 16 caused turnovers as a team, their ninth most in program history in a game. Sam Schelling also had seven draw controls, while Yurchak had six.Â
Â
Delaware took a 4-3 lead in the opening quarter. Livornese and McDaniel connected with each other to score the first two goals of the game in the first five minutes. Old Dominion scored three straight to take the lead, but Jenna McHale tied the game with just under four minutes remaining, and Halen Saroney beat the first-quarter buzzer to give the Blue Hens the lead heading into the second.
The Monarchs scored the first goal of the second to tie the game. Schelling and Sydni Rosa both scored their first goals of the season to give Delaware a two-goal lead. ODU and Delaware traded goals in the final minutes of the half, with Morgan Gore finding McDaniel after an ODU turnover to send the Blue Hens into the break up 7-5.
Delaware exploded for their highest-scoring quarter of the season, recording eight goals by six different players. Didio got the fun started with two straight goals off feeds from McDaniel. Sandwiched in between two Old Dominion goals was Callie Drab's first career goal at the 8:09 mark. The Blue Hens then scored five unanswered goals in the final two minutes, two of which were scored by Lizzie Hsu. Livornese and McDaniel scored in between Hsu's goals, and Matey capped it off with a goal just at the end of the quarter after taking a loose ball nearly the length of the field.
After two goals by the Monarchs to begin the final quarter, Delaware ended the game with three goals. Gore, Keira Grant, and Livornese all found the back of the net, with McDaniel assisting on Gore's and Livornese's.Â
Delaware's draw control record was previously set on March 8, 2017, when they had 23 against Monmouth. Livornese tied the single-game program record of 12, only done by Caroline Farley on March 27, 2019 against Oregon and on March 16, 2019 against Saint Joseph's. Livornese is also the first Delaware player to begin the season with four-straight three-goal games since Becky Gohsler in 2017. McDaniel's six assists were the seventh most in a game in program history, and gave her 16 total in her last three games played. She is the only player in the NCAA this season with multiple six-assist games. Schelling scored her second career goal, and her first since April 9, 2022, while her seven draw controls were a new career-high. Gore has now scored a goal in four consecutive games to begin her career, the first Blue Hen to do so in over 14 years. Matey's goal was the third of her career, and her first since March 17, 2021.
The 16 caused turnovers by Delaware were their ninth most in a game in program history, and their most in a game since March 7, 2020 against Elon. The Blue Hens' 18 goals were also their most in a game since scoring 20 against Delaware State on Feb. 24, 2021. Delaware has also won 10 consecutive games over Old Dominion dating back to 2007.Â
