COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Six runs in the first four innings against starter Wyatt Nelson proved to be too much of a deficit to overcome for Delaware (3-5) as it fell at #18 Maryland (4-4) 8-3 on Tuesday.
"I thought it was important that we came out and played a good baseball game today, and we didn't, it wasn't awful, but three runs is not going to win a lot of midweek games in college," head coach Greg Mamula said. "It's always important to have a short memory in this sport."
Nelson allowed four runs in the first two innings, including a home run by Maryland's Ian Petrutz. Delaware got runners in scoring position in the first and third innings, but did not bring any runs across.
Elijah Lambros' two-run shot in the fourth made it a six-run deficit for the visitors.
The Blue Hens began to claw back in the sixth, as three hits brought in a pair of runs. Joey Loynd doubled, Jake Dunion drove him in with a single, and Owen Petrich brought in Dunion with his second double of the contest to cut the Terps' lead to four.
Maryland responded by adding two more runs in its half of the sixth off reliever Dan Frake.
Delaware scratched another run across with an RBI single by JJ Freeman in the seventh, but did not add any other runs following the single, falling to Maryland 8-3.
Relievers Owen Margolis and Anthony Gubitosi each fired a scoreless inning, with Gubitosi striking out three of the four batters he faced in the eighth.
"That was big for those guys," Mamula said. "Neither of those guys had been throwing up to their potential and I thought they did that tonight. They've been working to get better and tonight was a good sign."
Petrich was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles in the contest, driving in a run.
"[Owen] needed that after a tough weekend [against Stetson} swinging the bat," Mamula said. "It was nice to see him hit some balls hard and get on base a few times."
Delaware returns home for a three-game set with Rider on Friday.
