NEWARK, Del. - The University of Delaware baseball team (3-7) dropped a pair of games on Saturday, falling to Rider (7-3) by scores of 7-6 and 10-2.
Game One: Rider 7, Delaware 6
The Broncs opened up the scoring early off back-to-back doubles to start the game. Then Delaware starter Eli Atiya settled in and pitched 4.2 innings with six strikeouts, while allowing just the one earned run.
The Hens' defense was able to pick up some outs on the base paths as Tyler Leach caught runners attempting to steal second for the third out in both the second and third innings. Andrew Amato also started a relay throw that threw out a runner stretching a single into a double in the fifth.
In the top of the seventh, errors cost the Blue & Gold two runs as Rider took a 3-0 lead. The next inning, an intentional walk loaded the bases for the Broncs, and three more runs came around to score.
Dan Covino put the Blue Hens on the board in the bottom of the eighth with a two-run home run to right field, his first long ball in a Delaware uniform. Later that inning, an RBI groundout by Jake Dunion and an RBI single by Aidan Kane cut the deficit down to two.
An RBI single by Jack Winsett in the ninth was an important insurance run for Rider as the Hens threatened in the bottom half of the inning. Covino recorded his third RBI of the game to make the score 7-5. JJ Freeman reached on an error with the bases loaded, which allowed Jackson Tyer to score. Down just one run, a rally-crushing double play ended game one.
Delaware bats recorded 13 hits, including three each from Bryce Greenly and Freeman.
Game Two: Rider 10, Delaware 2
In the seven-inning night cap of the doubleheader, Greenly pitched three scoreless innings while striking out four.
The game remained scoreless until the top of the fourth inning, when Rider scored two runs on two doubles off of Carter Welch. Two innings later, the Broncs had bases loaded and four more runs scored to increase their lead to six.
Delaware answered in the bottom of the sixth with a pair of walks and a Freeman triple that cleared the bases.
Rider added four more runs on three hits for a final score of 10-2.
Joey Loynd, Dunion, and Tyer each recorded hits, which was the first in Tyer's collegiate career.
The Blue Hens look to salvage the series tomorrow with Chris Grome on the mound for his third start of the season. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
