NEWARK, Del. – Charleston (22-3, 10-2 CAA) connected on 13 three pointers Saturday afternoon, proving too much for Delaware men's basketball (12-13, 4-8) in the 84-67 setback to the CAA's top team.
It remained a one-possession game up until Charleston pulled ahead 16-10 with 11:03 on the clock in the first half. Four-straight points from Christian Ray quickly made it a one-possession game again. The Hens would pull ahead 23-22 prior to the game returning to the back-and-forth play from the initial 10 minutes. The half ended 38-36 in favor of the visitors thanks to a buzz beater from Jameer Nelson Jr.
Jyáre Davis led all scorers with 12 first-half points and Nelson Jr. was right behind him with 10. The Hens held the advantage in shooting, hitting 46.9 of them, but the Cougars held a significant advantage in three-point percentage, finishing at 42.1 percent (8-for-19) compared to Delaware's 22.2 percent (2-for-9) mark.
Ten of Charleston's 38 in the first half came off of turnovers, as Delaware did not capitalize on any Cougars' turnover.
Charleston utilized an 8-2 run, including six unanswered over a 44-second stretch to pull ahead 46-38 before a UD timeout with 16:40 left in the second. The visitors would pull ahead by as many as 18 points in the second half before Delaware chipped away at the deficit for a 73-61 game with 5:27 remaining. Ultimately, the deficit proved to be too much.
Davis and Nelson Jr. each tallied 18 points, with Davis adding a game-high nine rebounds and Nelson Jr. dishing out a game-best eight assists. Both totals were season highs for the duo.
Cavan Reilly joined the pair in double figures with an even 10 points. Ray finished with eight points and nine rebounds.
Overall, Delaware shot 40.7 percent from the field and a season-worst 17.6 percent from three, which proved to be the difference. Charleston shot 43.3 percent and 40.6 percent from three. Delaware went 16-for-16 from the free throw line, marking the sixth time under Martin Inglesby the Blue Hens were perfect at the line.
Saturday's game was played in front of a season-best 2,875 fans and marks the second-straight home game with a season mark in that category.
Delaware hosts Drexel on Wednesday as it looks to avenge the overtime loss from earlier this season.
