Baseball Wins Wild Route 1 Rivalry Contest Over Delaware State

NEWARK, Del. – Delaware baseball (9-11, 2-1 CAA) combined with Delaware State (5-13) for 26 runs on 24 hits and ultimately prevailed 14-12 to reclaim state bragging rights.

"It was a classic college midweek game," head coach Greg Mamula said. "It felt like the first one to 20 was going to win, and today, it happened to be the first one to 13."

Delaware fell behind 2-0 after a first-inning home run against starter Nate Rolka, but a Jake Dunion RBI single and Aidan Kane's second homer of the season put the Hens back in front. The two lead changes were the first of eight in the contest.

Falling behind again, Joey Loynd added to his CAA lead in doubles and RBIs, gapping a two-run double to go on top 5-4.

The Hornets tied the game in the fifth inning, but a mammoth three-run homer and an emphatic bat flip by Bryce Greenly put Delaware in front 8-6, his sixth home run of the young campaign.

"I was just trying to help out the team [in that situation] and hit the ball hard," Greenly said. "It's hard to stay focused in a long game like this, but we stayed in it.

After Delaware State took the lead back, the Hens fought ahead for good, scoring five runs in the fifth inning.

Dan Frake kept the opposition to just one earned run over three frames, bringing some life to a beleaguered bullpen late in the game.

"[Dan's] been awesome," Mamula said. "He comes in and is aggressive, attacks hitters and sets the mentality for the last few innings."

Chris Amparo of Delaware State had a historic night, smashing his third home run of the contest against Wyatt Nelson in the top of the ninth, becoming just the third player to do so in Hornets history. Nonetheless, Nelson settled and got the save as Delaware took the game 14-12.

Loynd, Dunion and Gabe Dermott each recorded multiple hits, and all but one hitter reached base in the victory.

Delaware heads back to the road for the first time since late February, embarking on a three-game conference series with Elon.
