Softball Wins Route 1 Rivalry with 5-3 Win Over Delaware State

NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware softball team extended its winning streak to eight-consecutive games as it defeated Delaware State 5-3 on Tuesday afternoon in the Route 1 Rivalry at Delaware Softball Stadium. With the win, the Blue Hens improve to 20-15 overall.

Graceyn Frost picked up the win in the circle, going 4.2 innings while allowing three runs, two earned, while striking out five. Taylor Wroten pitched 2.1 shutout innings of relief to earn her third save of the season.

Julz Garber and Chloe Blantz each had two hits to lead the offense and Garber added two RBI and a run scored.

Delaware State opened the scoring in the top of the second with a single, but the Blue Hens answered back in the bottom of the third. A couple of singles and a stolen base put two runners in scoring position with two outs before Julz Garber lined a single into center field that scored Sydney Shaffer and Hanna Garber to give UD the 2-1 lead.

The Blue Hens extended the lead to 4-1 in the fourth inning. Kiara Mills led off with a walk and came all the way around to score on a double into the left-center field gap by Grace Hrustich. One out later, Blantz lined an RBI into right field to bring the lead up to three.

The Hornets plated a couple of runs in the top of the fifth to cut the lead to 4-3, but Wroten got out of a bases-loaded jam to keep UD on top.

Julz Garber used her speed to generate an insurance run in the bottom half of the fifth as she reached on a one-out infield single and advanced to second on a throwing error. She promptly stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly by Brittney Mendoza to make it 5-3.

Delaware State opened the top of the seventh with a single and a double to put the tying run in scoring position, but Wroten got a strikeout before Hanna Garber threw a runner out at the plate. A final ground out ended the game and sealed Delaware's eighth-straight win.

The Blue Hens will head out on the road this weekend as they continue CAA play at Drexel. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 2 p.m. with Sunday's finale scheduled for 2 p.m.
