Hranicka Named CAA Defensive Player Of The Week For Third Time
5/1/2023 1:00:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse
RICHMOND, Va. - Madison Hranicka of Delaware's women's lacrosse team was named CAA Defensive Player of the Week for the third time this season after helping lead the Blue Hens to a CAA Tournament clinching win on Saturday. She becomes the first Delaware player in program history with three Defensive Player of the Week honors in a season.
Hranicka led a defense that held Towson to their lowest goal total in CAA play this year. She had six caused turnovers and five ground balls, becoming the fourth player this season with multiple games of at least six caused turnovers and the only CAA player. She now has 79 for her career, one shy of joining Erin Wein (126), Chantae Simms (90), Caitlin McCartney (86), and Becky Gohsler as the only players in program history with 80 caused turnovers. She also added to her single-season program record, now totaling 46 on the year. She recorded her fifth game this season with at least five ground balls, and now has 39 on the season. Hranicka is now the only player this season with three CAA Player of the Week honors, and the first CAA player with three since Paulina DiFatta of Elon did so in 2021. It's the first time since 2015 Delaware has had a CAA Defensive Player of the Week four times during the season, as Riley Gillin also received the honor earlier this season to go along with Hranicka's three.
For the year, Hranicka has helped Delaware's defense rank first in the CAA in caused turnovers per game and 17th nationally at 9.60. Individually, she ranks first in the CAA and third nationally in caused turnovers per game at 3.07 and second in the CAA and 33rd nationally in ground balls per game at 2.60. She is one of four players this year with at least 45 caused turnovers (46) and 35 ground balls (39). This season, she is one of five players this season with at least six caused turnovers in multiple games. She and Chantae Simms are the only players in Delaware history to have two games of at least six caused turnovers for their careers, and she and Caitlin McCartney are the only players in UD history with three career games with at least five caused turnovers. Hranicka is the only player in program history with three games of at least five caused turnovers in a single season.
Delaware concluded the regular season with eight wins, four CAA wins, and five wins at home. It's their most overall wins and home wins in a season since going 8-10 overall and 5-3 at home in 2018. Their 4-3 CAA record is their best since going 4-2 in 2017.
The CAA Tournament begins with No. 1 Stony Brook and No. 4 Delaware on May 4 at noon, at Tiger Stadium at Towson University. The winner will play No. 2 Towson or No. 3 Drexel on Saturday, May 6.
