Softball’s Season Ends with 1-0 Loss to Stony Brook

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The top-seeded University of Delaware softball team saw its season come to an end on Friday afternoon, falling 1-0 to No. 7 Stony Brook in an elimination game at the CAA Tournament. With the setback, the Blue Hens close the season with a 29-20 overall record.

Taylor Wroten started in the circle and went 2.0 innings, allowing just one run on two hits while striking out one. Emily Winburn came on in relief and fired 5.0 shutout innings, striking out two while allowing just two singles.

Kiara Mills had two hits and Brittney Mendoza was also on base twice with a single and a walk to lead the UD offense.

Stony Brook took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first behind a hit, an error, a hit batter and a walk. Wroten stranded the bases loaded with a big strikeout.

The Blue Hens threatened in the bottom of the first with a two-out single by Mills and a walk to Mendoza. However, they could not draw even.

Winburn came on in the third inning and faced the minimum over her first four innings.

Delaware did not get another runner on base until the fifth inning, when a pair of walks put two runners on with two outs, but a ground out ended the threat.

Singles by Mills and Mendoza, as well as a walk by Katie Scheivert, loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the sixth, but a ground out and fly out kept the Blue Hens off the board.

Hanna Garber drew a one-out walk to put the tying run on base in the seventh, but a ground out ended the game.

Delaware won its second-straight CAA Regular Season Championship with an 18-5 record in conference play. Six Blue Hen earned All-CAA honors and the squad took home three major postseason awards. Emily Winburn became the program's first CAA Pitcher of the Year and Kiara Mills won UD's second-straight CAA Defensive Player of the Year. Jen Steele and her staff earned their second-consecutive CAA Coach of the Year honor.
