Men's Lacrosse Season Ends with a Heart-Breaking Finish against Top-Seeded Duke

DURHAM, N.C. -Â Delaware men's lacrosse season ends with a heart-breaking loss in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament against Duke 12-11 on Sunday, May 14.
The Blue Hens finish the season 13-5 overall. The Blue Devils improve to 14-2 and take on Michigan in the Quarterfinals in Albany on Saturday, May 20.
The Blue Hens got out to a hot start, getting off to a 4-1 lead to start the first quarter. Jason Kolar opened with the games first goal a minute and a half into the first quarter. Tye Kurtz proceeded to score the Blue Hens next three goals at the 13:26, 6:46, and 5:52 marks. The Blue Hens would extend their lead by as large as 7-3 with a goal from Mike Robinson to end the first quarter, and back-to-back goals scored by JP Ward to start the second quarter.
After the Blue Hens extended their lead to 8-4 following a Cam Acchione goal, the Blue Devils went on a five goal run from the 5:39 mark in the second quarter to the 8:48 mark in the third quarter to take a 9-8 lead.Â
Following back-to-back goals scored by Kurtz, and Brendan Powers to give the Blue Hens a 10-9 lead, the Blue Devils scored three straight goals to re-take the lead. The Blue Hens wouldn't go down without a fight as Mike Robinson cut the Blue Devils lead in half with a goal with 2:35 left in the fourth quarter, However, it would be too little too late as the Blue Devils defense locked up for the final two and a half minutes of play.Â
As a team, the Blue Devils out shot the Blue Hens 45-30, including a 27-22 shots-on-goal advantage.Â
Individually, Kurtz had four of the 11 Blue Hens goals. Ward, and Robinson also had multi-goal games. Defensively, Owen Grant had two caused turnovers. Matt Kilkeary was credited with the decision. He had 11 saves.Â
