MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – Delaware baseball (30-29) saw its season end at the hands of Charleston (36-21) 5-2 on Friday, being eliminated from the CAA Tournament
During the game, Joey Loynd recorded his 98th hit of the season, tying a 40-year-old-record set by Jeff Trout in 1983. Similarly, Dan Covino matched the program record of four walks, something he also achieved on Mar. 5. Against Rider.
Bryce Greenly cranked a leadoff triple in the first inning but did not come around to score as JJ Freeman bunted into a double play.
Charleston responded with a leadoff triple and chased the runner home with a sacrifice fly against Greenly.
Delaware answered back in the third. After Loynd's record-tying hit, Covino walked, and Josearmando Diaz drove Loynd in with an RBI single.
Charleston scratched another run in the fifth against Eli Atiya, and the Hens did not respond until the seventh.
With a runner on second, Freeman chopped a ground ball up the first base line that the first baseman did not handle, seeing Jackson Tyer race home with the tying run.
The Cougars scored three runs over the final few innings and made some sparkling defensive plays to keep Delaware off the board.
Delaware nearly took the lead in the eighth, as Tyler Leach destroyed a ball to center field, but the wind blew it back in for a flyout.
Delaware was retired after Covino's record-setting walk in the ninth, seeing its season end with a 5-2 score.
Diaz was the only Blue Hen to record multiple hits in the loss.
Under first-year head coach Greg Mamula, the Blue Hens went 30-29 and returned to the tournament for the first time since 2017. In addition, the team drew 302 walks, a program record.
