Softball Ends Regular Season with 13th Shutout

NEWARK, Del. – For the second time this season, the University of Delaware softball team swept a CAA opponent without allowing a single run throughout the entire series as the Blue Hens completed the weekend sweep of Hampton with an 8-0 victory in six innings on Saturday afternoon. With the win, UD finishes the regular season with a 29-18 overall record and an 18-5 mark in CAA play.

Taylor Wroten started in the circle and was sensational, firing her second shutout of the weekend and fourth of the season. She allowed just three singles on the afternoon and finished with three strikeouts.

Katie Scheivert finished with two hits, her third multi-hit effort of the series, and two runs scored to lead the offense. Hanna Garber and Brittney Mendoza both had extra-base hits that resulted in multiple RBI.

It was a pitcher's duel for the first four innings as the two teams combined for just one base runner. The Blue Hens did not get their first base runner until the bottom of the fifth inning but changed that in a big way. Scheivert broke the seal with a bunt single and moved up on a two-out, pinch-hit single by Sydney Shaffer. Kristen Luzon was hit by a pitch to load the bases before Grace Rudolph walked to force home Scheivert and give UD a 1-0 lead. Garber followed with a bases-clearing double that quickly made it a 4-0 game.

In the sixth, Julz Garber and Kiara Mills both singled and quickly came around to score on a two-run double by Mendoza. Another infield single by Scheivert put runners on the corners and Chloe Blantz knocked in Mendoza with a sacrifice fly. A Zoey Valentino double moved Scheivert to third base before Kate Hondru provide the walk-off RBI with a fielder's choice as Scheivert beat the throw home for the 8-0 win.

The Blue Hens clinched their second-straight CAA Regular Season Championship on Friday and will be the No. 1 seed at next week's CAA Tournament, which will be hosted by Hofstra. Delaware earned a two-day bye and will open play on Thursday, May 11 at 12 p.m.
