Softball Adds Transfer Morgan Hess

NEWARK, Del. -Â University of Delaware Softball has added Morgan Hess as a transfer from Presbyterian College, as announced on June 9, 2023.Â
"We couldn't be more excited to add Morgan to our Blue Hen family! She immediately elevates our program with her ability to hit the long ball, while also putting up competitive pitching numbers in the circle," head coach Jen Steele said. "She is exactly the type of player we need in order to continue reaching our championship aspirations."Â
Hess comes to Delaware after completing two extraordinary seasons as a two-way player with Blue Hose. Hess needed only two seasons to set the Presbyterian career home run record at 29, hitting 13 in 2023 and 16 in 2022. Overall, she hit .326/.405/.729 with 79 RBI and 17 doubles in 97 games to go with her 29 home runs. in the circle, Hess had a 2.64 ERA in 251.2 innings pitched, starting in 38 of her 51 games pitched, striking out 242 hitters. She won 23 games, completing 25 of them and throwing eight shutouts.Â
In 2023, she was named First-Team All-Big South after hitting .270/.352/.603. Her slugging percentage was the fourth-highest mark in program history, and her 29 RBI and 76 total bases led the team. She also pitched 124.2 innings, throwing 13 complete games with 98 strikeouts and finishing with a 3.43 ERA. A Second-Team All-Conference selection in 2022, she generated arguably the greatest freshman season in Presbyterian history, as she set a new school record in batting average at .379, RBI at 50, total bases at 112, home runs at 16, and slugging percentage at .848. She also struck out 144 hitters, the second most in program history, and won 15 games while recording a 1.76 ERA in 127 innings pitched.Â
From South Riding, Va., Hess was named All-State, All-Region, All-Conference and All-Loudoun County in both 2018 and 2019 at Freedom High School. She posted a 1.80 ERA with 205 strikeouts and hit .385 with five home runs.
Delaware won its second-straight CAA Regular Season Championship with an 18-5 record in conference play. Six Blue Hens earned All-CAA honors and the squad took home three major postseason awards. Steele and her staff earned their second-consecutive CAA Coach of the Year honor.
