NEWARK, Del. – What a season it was! The University of Delaware track & field team closed out the 2022-23 campaign on a high note on June 8 under the tutelage of first-year head coach Kenyetta Ivyebele. The squad was tasked to compete in 19 meets, seven indoor and 12 outdoor, highlighted by a national championship appearance during the outdoor season.
INDOOR SEASON
Coach Iyvebele was given the reigns to lead the roster size of 57 for the first time in her career and the team did not disappoint. The six regular season indoor meets prepped the Blue Hens put together a strong outing at the first-ever Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Indoor Championships. The team rewrote the UD history books 21 times, including setting new school records four times, and set personal best times/marks 85 times in seven meets competed.
Poised to compete in the first indoor championship of its kind, the Blue Hens finished tied for sixth place with 51 points. The Blue Hens racked up four medals: one gold, two silver and one bronze, all who have earned a spot on the All-CAA team.
OUTDOOR SEASON
The Blue Hens shifted gears quickly to embrace the warm weather as the outdoor season kickstarted on Mar. 3. The prestigious Texas Relays was a meet circled on Delaware's schedule as Mike A. Myers Track & Soccer Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas, Austin would serve as the host of the 2023 NCAA Track & Field Outdoor Championships in June. The squad set two Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium records, changed up the history books 16 times, including setting new program records five times and set new personal best times/marks 69 times prior to the start of the postseason.
Enter the CAA Outdoor Championships in Williamsburg, Va. where the Blue Hens finished the two-day championship in fifth place with 78.50 points. The Blue & Gold came back to Newark with five medals two gold, one silver and two bronze - headlined by impressive performances by Megan Albamonti, Myrissa McFolling-Young, Halima Scott, Bridget Joyce and Marie-Frederique Poulin and the quartet found their names on the All-CAA team list. The meet also saw the Blue Hens rewrite the history books seven times, set two new school records and set a new Walter J. Zable Stadium record.
NCAA-Bound
A program-best five Blue Hens earned berths to NCAA Track & Field Outdoor Championships First Rounds in Jacksonville, Fla. Albamonti (javelin throw), McFolling-Young (discus throw), Chioma Njoku (hammer throw),Poulin (400m hurdles) and Scott (400m) became official entries into the postseason event. Albamonti successfully punched her ticket to the national championship and was able to claim a ninth place finish at the meet along with collecting Second Team All-America honors in her national Championship debut.
GO MEGAN GO
Albamonti's historic season didn't end just yet as she was named the CAA Field Athlete of the Year, the first in school history and the second top honoree since Victoria Caruso took home the Rookie of the Year honors back in 2010. The three-peat CAA javelin champion continued to compete most recently at the 2023 Toyota USATF Outdoor Championships concluding her career in the Blue & Gold uniform. Albamonti qualified for the upcoming 2023 NACAC U23 Championships (July 21-23).
