NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware cross country and track & field head coach Kenyetta Iyevbele has been extended through 2026, Director of Athletics, Community, and Campus Recreation Chrissi Rawak announced Wednesday morning.
Iyevbele's team continued its dominance throughout the outdoor season where the program finished in fifth place at the CAA Outdoor Championships and a program-best five Blue Hens in Megan Albamonti, Myrissa McFolling-Young, Chioma Njoku, Marie-Frederique Poulin and Halima Scott, qualified for the NCAA Track & Field Championships First Rounds. Albamonti, who captured her third-straight CAA gold medal in the javelin throw and made her third-consecutive appearance at the East Regionals, reigned supreme as she advanced to the NCAA Track & Field Championships for the first time in her career. Albamonti finished in ninth place to collect Second Team All-America honors in her National Championship debut. She was also named the CAA Field Athlete of the Year and recently competed at the U.S. Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Ore. at the prestigious Hayward Field. Albamonti's throw of 53.72m proved good enough to secure a spot in the upcoming 2023 NACAC U23 Championships where she will be representing Team USA in San Jose, Costa Rica July 21-23.
In her inaugural season at Delaware, Iyevbele played a pivotal role in guiding the 2021-22 track & field team to a remarkable second-place finish at the CAA Outdoor championships. With the sprints and distance runners under her guidance along with assisting in the development of Albamonti, Iyevbele coached Susanna Weir to secure a spot in the NCAA East Preliminaries comping in the 10,000 meters to round out the Blue Hens' impressive campaign.
The Blue Hens have also enjoyed success in the classroom as a total of 66 cross country and track & field student-athletes have been named to the CAA Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll since Iyevbele's arrival in Newark.
