NEWARK, Del. -Â University of Delaware volleyball senior Savannah Seemans won a grant on behalf of the Gatorade Play It Forward program for the Sean Locke 24 Foundation.
The Sean Locke 24 Foundation's mission is to educate high school and college students on signs of depression, remove the stigma of depression, and make available resources to help people with depression and the real threat of suicide, assist high school and college students with the transitions of life, helping them gain the tools to live life with mental illness, and create a safe haven where high school and college students receive professional help and speak to peers about their struggles with depression and the threat of suicide. The foundation was named in honor of Sean Locke, a St. Mark's High School graduate in 2012 and former captain of Delaware's men's basketball team. He helped the program reach the NCAA Tournament in 2014. Locke lost his battle with depression in 2018.
"It means a lot to be able to have this opportunity to support SL24," Seemans said. "They have done a lot for our community in supporting mental health of athletes and all of those in our community."
Seemans was able to secure an opportunity for a grant for the foundation because of her being a former Gatorade Player of the Year for the state of Delaware. She submitted a video explaining how the foundation supports equity and inclusion in youth sports.
Seemans, also a St. Mark's High School graduate, is now in her senior season with the Blue Hens. She has appeared in 68 games in her career, 612 kills, 100 aces, 731 digs, and 90 blocks. She is also a former All-CAA Rookie Team selection and has been named to the CAA Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll and CSC Academic All-District Team. On the court, she most recently helped Delaware to a 3-0 opening weekend to the 2023 season at the Blue Hen Invitational.
