Volleyball Caps Off Non-Conference Slate With Victory Over Rider

NEWARK, Del. -Â University of Delaware volleyball defeated Rider in four sets (18-25, 25-13, 25-11, 25-10) on Sept. 10, 2023 to wrap up the non-conference portion of their schedule.

- Lani Mason had a game-high 21 kills with a .576 hitting percentage.
- Savannah Seemans had nine kills, hit. 318, and recorded nine digs.Â
- Kirah Johnson had eight kills, hit .571, and had five blocks.
- Ezgi Basaranlar recorded a double-double with 35 assists and 10 digs, while also picking up four blocks.
- Mackenzie Sobczyk had six kills and four blocks.Â
- Eileen Gex had 13 digs.
- Amelia Painter had 10 digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Rider took control early with an 8-2 lead and maintained a 20-13 lead late in the set.Â
- Delaware put together a run to cut the Broncs' lead to 22-18, but Rider scored the final three points.Â
- Mason and Seemans both had four kills each, while Basaranlar had eight assists.Â
- The Blue Hens started the second set with a lead at 9-3.
- Delaware then went on a roll to extend their lead to 15-6 and 22-10 before claiming a 25-13 set win.
- Mason added another five kills in the set, while Seemans had three.Â
- Both teams played nearly even to begin the third set, with Delaware leading 10-9.
- Delaware then scored 15 of the final 18 points of the set, which included runs of 6-0, 5-0, and 4-0. Mason had six kills during the final stretch to punctuate the Blue Hens' run.Â
- Mason had eight kills total in the set, while Basaranlar had 11 assists.Â
- Delaware immediately took control of the second set by going up 10-2, with Mason contributing three kills.Â
- With the score at 13-7, Delaware recorded nine of the next 10 points to go up 22-8, and finish with a 25-10 set victory.Â
- Mason had four kills in the final set and Basaranlar had nine assists.Â
GAME NOTES
- Mason's 21 kills were a season-best, and was her second 20-kill game of the season (August 27 against Niagara),Â
- This was Mason's 17th career 20-kill game.Â
- Mason is the only player in the CAA this season with two games of at least 20 kills so far.Â
- Mason became the third player in the NCAAÂ this season with at least 20 kills and a hitting percentage of at least .575.
- She also became the first Delaware player with at least 20 kills and a hitting percentage of at least .500 in a game since Chandler Bryant against The College of Charleston on Oct. 3, 2014.
- Basaranlar had her sixth game this season of at least 35 assists. She also recorded her 13th career double-double and her first this season.
- Sobczyk tied her career-best in blocks with four, last done on Oct. 22 against Hofstra. Her six kills were also the second-most in her career, and the most she's had since Sept. 18, 2021 against James Madison (seven).Â
- Johnson had her fourth game this season of at least five blocks and her fourth game this season where she had a hitting percentage of at least .500.Â
- Gex recorded her seventh game this season of at least 10 digs.Â
