Field Hockey Tops Hofstra 1-0 in First CAA Contest of the Season

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The University of Delaware field hockey team ended its two-game skid Friday afternoon on the road as the Blue Hens topped the Hofstra University Pride 1-0 in their first CAA game of the season.
COACH'S QUOTE
"Relieved with our win today. Going into the game we knew that we would have some player and position changes that needed time to transition and adjust," said head coach Rolf van de Kerkhof. "We knew it would be a battle and I am proud of our team for finding a way to secure the win," van de Kerkhof continued. "I also have to give credit to Hofstra for the fight they took to us all game. This is the strongest Pride team I have seen in years and the way they competed today makes me believe that we will see them in the CAA Tournament."
HENS HIGHLIGHTS
- Sophomore Kylie Walbert tallied eight saves on the day as she recorded her second shutout of the year.
- Berber Bakermans scored Delaware's lone goal as the senior had two shots with both on frame.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a brisk first quarter that saw a combined two shots and two saves, Bakermans scored the game's lone goal at the 18:11 mark in the second.
- In the third, the Pride tested the Blue Hens keeper as Walbert had four saves to keep the Hens 1-0 lead.
GAME NOTES
- Walbert's eight saves were the third most by the Delaware keeper this season.
- The Blue Hens four shots were the lowest by the squad this season after four straight of 14-plus shot contests
UP NEXT
Delaware returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 17 as the Blue Hens head to the City of Brotherly Love for a ranked bout with No. 13 Saint Joe's. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
