NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware field hockey team dropped a heartbreaking 2-1 contest in double overtime to No.15-ranked Princeton University Friday night at Rullo Stadium.
COACHES QUOTE
"Our best team performance and fight thus far this season," said head coach Rolf van de Kerkhof. "As their Head Coach I am so unbelievably proud of this players group! It is clear they understand to compete from start to finish and their performance in every game shows growth in our game day performance! We may be hurt about the final outcome, but not worried as today's game has made us better and stronger," continued van de Kerkhof. "Something that will pay off as we advance in our season and ultimately CAA conference play."
HENS HIGHLIGHTS
- Senior Julia Duffhuis tallied seven shots and recorded the game-tying goal with just over a minute left in regulation
- Sophomore Kylie Walbert recorded 11 saves on the night
- Valentina Martorell and Berber Bakermans were each credited with an assist on Duffhuis' goal
- Freshman Olivia Schmincke recorded two late-game shots but could not find the back of the Princeton cage.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a scoreless first quarter, the Tigers found the back of the Blue Hens cage on a goal from Liz Agatucci to give Princeton a 1-0 edge headed to the break
- In the fourth, Martorell inserted the ball off a penalty corner to Bakermans who promptly set up Duffhuis as if it was an "alley-oop" and the senior finished with a goal to knot the game at 1-1 and force overtime.
- Neither team scored in the first overtime, but in the second 10:00, golden-goal overtime, the Tigers found the back of the cage for a second time to down the Hens
GAME NOTES
- Walbert's 11 saves are the most for a Blue Hen goalie this season
- Duffhuis' seven shots are the most for a single Blue Hen through UD's first five games
