Women’s Basketball Battles With Stony Brook

NEWARK, Del. – The epic battle between two undefeated teams in CAA play commenced Sunday afternoon in Newark as the University of Delaware women's basketball team welcomed Stony Brook inside Bob Carpenter Center for the second time in program history. The Blue Hens (6-9, 2-1 CAA) saw its advantage through three quarters disappear and fell 79-67 to the Seawolves (14-1, 4-0 CAA). Stony Brook is now the lone CAA team that remains unbeaten in league play.

GAME NOTES
The Blue Hens hit the road next weekend for a two-game stretch in Virginia and North Carolina. Delaware will face William & Mary on Friday, Jan. 19 at 7 p.m. from Kaplan Center and then play against North Carolina A&T on Sunday, Jan. 21 at 1 p.m. from Corbett Sport Center. Both games will be broadcasted on FloHoops.
HEN HIGHLIGHTS
- Leading the way for the Blue Hens was Klarke Sconiers, who scored 16 points (5-of-12 FG, 6-of-9 FT) to go with seven rebounds and three blocks.
- Sconiers was one of three Blue Hens, along with Sydney Boone, and Rebecca Demeke with double figures, both of whom scored 10 points. Boone shot 4-of-10 from the field while Demeke was 4-of-11. Boone also added three steals to her statline.
- Darrionna Howard led the Blue Hens in rebounds with 10 while Chloe Wilson followed with eight.
- Delaware finished the afternoon shooting 37 percent (27-73) from the field, 16 percent (4-25) from beyond the arc, and 60 percent (9-of-15) from the free throw line.
- The Blue Hens grabbed 41 rebounds and scored 14 second-chance points off 15 offensive boards.
- The Blue & Gold finished the day with 14 assists, 44 points in the paint, seven fast break points, 24 bench points and scored 16 points off of 23 Hampton miscues.
First Quarter: Delaware 16, Stony Brook 14
- Stony Brook opened the game scoring 26 seconds in for the early 2-0 lead.
- Klarke Sconiers immediately responded with her iconic hook shot to kickstart a 10-2 spurt. The run was highlighted by Tara Cousins' scoring her 501st career point at the 7:18 mark with her signature stepback jumper.
- The Seawolves clawed back to only trail by three points, 10-7, with 4:42 remaining in the quarter.
- After a 2:39 scoring drought between both teams, Stony Brook was able to go on a 6-1 run to regain the brief one-point lead, 12-11, with 53 seconds left in the quarter.
- Delaware got back into the groove and scored five straight before Gigi Gonzalez's jumper at the buzzer closed the Seawolves gap to two, 16-14
- After the Seawolves tied the game at 16-16 in the first 30 seconds of the quarter, the Blue Hens went on a 16-7 run to take a 32-23 lead with four and a half minutes to play in the half. The run was started by a Boone layup. Along with Boone, Delaware received point contributions from Sconiers, Wilson, Demeke, and Howard during the run.
- Just like the first quarter, Stony Brook closed the quarter on another run, this time, it was a 10-2 run to cut the Blue Hens lead down to 34-33 heading into the second half.
Third Quarter: Delaware 54, Stony Brook 52
- Delaware was able to build a six-point cushion after Ande'a Cherisier and Demeke combined for five straight points, 46-39, with 5:24 showing on the third quarter clock.
- The Blue Hens kept the Seawolves at bay only allowing them within one point until a Shamarla King triple gave Stony Brook the one-point advantage, 50-49, with 1:16 left.
- Delaware regained the lead thanks to Cousins answering back with a triple of her own followed by Sconiers' pair of free throws for the narrow four-point lead, 54-40.
- Victoria Keenan would close out the third with a layup as the buzzer sounded off, sending the 54-52 game into the final quarter.
Fourth Quarter: Stony Brook 79, Delaware 67
- Two minutes into the fourth, Stony Brook would retake the lead at 58-56. After Grace Sundback tied the game up at 58 a piece, the Seawolves proceeded to go on a 14-5 run to take a 71-63 lead halfway through the frame to retake the lead for good.
- The Blue didn't go down without a fight as it would cut the Seawolves' lead down to as little as six at 73-67.
- Stony Brook saw the light at the end of the tunnel, putting away six free throws, to settle the 79-67.
GAME NOTES
- Howard's 10-rebound performance was her third time pulling down double-digit boards this season, and the first time since Nov. 14 against Lehigh.
- Sunday was the fifth-ever meeting between the Seawolves and Blue Hens, and the first time in program history that the Seawolves defeated the Blue Hens. The Blue Hens are now 4-1 all-time against Stony Brook.
- The last time the Blue Hens suffered a setback after heading into halftime with the lead was earlier this season against VCU on Dec. 11, 2023.
- Gonzalez paced Stony Brook with 20 points, five assists and three steals. Keenan followed with 17 points (5-10 3FG) while Sherese Pittman chipped in with 12 points and five rebounds. King added 11 points and 11 rebounds from the bench.
