Women’s Basketball Falls In Overtime At William & Mary

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The University of Delaware women's basketball team opened its two-game road slate Friday evening in Williamsburg, Va. poised for another tough CAA battle. The Blue Hens (6-10, 2-2 CAA) stayed in the game through its entirety but dropped a heartbreaking 78-72 overtime setback to William & Mary (8-8, 4-1 CAA) inside Kaplan Arena.
HEN HIGHLIGHTS
First Quarter: William & Mary 19, Delaware 13
The Blue Hens will close January's road slate in Greensboro, N.C. Sunday afternoon and will face North Carolina A&T inside Corbett Sports Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. and will be broadcast on FloHoops.
HEN HIGHLIGHTS
- Tara Cousins paced Delaware with 19 points and two steals while Chloe Wilson added 13 points and four rebounds.
- Ande'a Cherisier had 12 points and four rebounds.
- Nakiyah Mays-Prince led the Blue Hens in assists with four, and added nine points.
- Delaware finished the evening shooting 41 percent (30-73) from the field, 16 percent (5-31) from three-point territory and 50 percent (7-14) from the free-throw line.
- The Blue Hens had 37 rebounds and scored 11 second-chance points off of 11 offensive rebounds.
- The Blue & Gold also finished with 13 assists, three blocks, 17 steals, 10 fastbreak points, 25 bench points and scored 22 points off of 27 Tribe miscues.
First Quarter: William & Mary 19, Delaware 13
- The Tribe got out to a quick start, scoring the game's first nine points.
- Wilson would break the ice, scoring the first four points for the Blue Hens.
- After William & Mary regained their nine point lead, Cousins scored the next five points to cut their lead down to 15-11.
- The Tribe finished the quarter with a 19-13 lead.
- The Blue Hens started the second quarter on an 8-2 run to tie the game at 21-21.
- After William & Mary responded with a 10-2 run of their own to make it a 31-23 lead, Delaware closed the half out on a strong 15-5 run.
- The run was sparked by Wilson, who scored the first five points off a 3-point basket and a layup. Klarke Sconiers, Cousins, and Sydney Boone contributed points during the run as well to give the Blue Hens a 38-36 lead at the half.
- Both sides held leads during the third quarter.
- The Tribe quickly regained the lead at the start of the third quarter, and led by as much as 44-40.
- Delaware responded with a 11-2 run to regain the lead at 51-46. The run was started by a Cousins midrange shot as Cherisier, Mays-Prince, and Grace Sundback contributed during the run as well.
- William & Mary closed out the quarter with an 11-3 run to take a 57-54 lead into the final frame.
- The Tribe's lead heading into the final frame quickly evaporated as the Blue Hens scored five straight to open the quarter, thanks to a Cousins jump shot and a Rebecca Demeke 3-pointer.
- Delaware would not let go of the lead throughout the fourth quarter, and led by as much as 61-57.
- However, William & Mary would keep things close and head into overtime.
- After a pair of Mays-Prince free throws to give Delaware a 69-67 lead before the Tribe went on a 7-1 run to take a 74-70 lead with under a minute to play.
- Mays-Price made a layup with 39 seconds in overtime to cut the lead down to two, but would be too much to overcome as William & Mary would settle the 78-72 final.
- Friday's game was the 43rd meeting between the two programs with Delaware holding a 32-11 record, 29-10 in conference play and 15-5 in Williamsburg.
- The Blue Hens winning streak against the Tribe is stopped at six games with head coaches Sarah Jenkins and Erin Dickerson Davis both having one win apiece against one another.
- This is the second straight game the Blue Hens suffered a setback after heading into halftime with the lead. Last time it was against Stony Brook on Jan. 14, 2024.
- Cassidy Geddes paced William & Mary with 20 points, seven rebounds and four steals. Anahi-Lee Cauley followed with 17 points and six rebounds. Nylah Young (11 points) and Alexa Mikeska (10 points) both pulled down 10 rebounds each.
- The next time Delaware and William & Mary will meet this season is on Feb. 9 in Newark, Del. inside Bob Carpenter Center as part of our Black History Month Legacy Game and Unity Night. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. and will be broadcast simultaneously on FloHoops and Delmarva Sports Network.
