Women’s Basketball Tussles With North Carolina A&T

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The University of Delaware women's basketball team closed out its brief two-game CAA road stretch Sunday afternoon in Greensboro, N.C. rand the squad was ready to battle a scrappy North Carolina A&T (10-6, 4-1 CAA) inside Corbett Sports Center. Despite scoring a season-best 41 points in the first half, it was a tale of two halves as the Blue Hens dropped a 65-62 decision to the Aggies. The Blue & Gold are now 6-11 on the year and 2-3 in league play.

First Quarter: North Carolina A&T 16, Delaware 13

The Blue Hens will return to the First State next weekend and will play hosts to Northeastern on Friday, Jan. 26 and Towson on Sunday, 28 inside Bob Carpenter Center. HEN HIGHLIGHTS
- The Blue Hens were led by Grace Sundback, who had a career 13 points (5-of-12 FG, 1-of-4 3FG, 2-of-2 FT), five rebounds and four assists. She was one of three Blue Hens in double figures.
- Joining Sundback was Klarke Sconiers (12 points) and Rebecca Demeke (11 points).
- Chloe Wilson and Sydney Boone both pulled down five rebounds each while Tara Cousins led in assists with five and added seven points.
- Delaware finished the afternoon shooting 47.2 percent (25-53) from the field, 39.1 percent (9-23) from three-point territory and a perfect 100 percent (3-3) from the free-throw line.
- The Blue Hens held a +4 rebound margin (35-31) and scored 13 second-chance points off of seven offensive rebounds.
- The Blue & Gold also finished the day with 17 assists, one block, nine steals, six fastbreak points, 18 bench points and scored 14 points off of 16 Aggie turnovers.
First Quarter: North Carolina A&T 16, Delaware 13
- The Aggies got out to a quick 10-2 lead in the game's first four minutes.
- The Blue Hens closed out the first quarter on an 11-6 run. A pair of Cousins free throws sparked the run. Sconiers, Demeke and Sundback would also contribute points during the run.
- The Aggies took a 16-13 lead into the second quarter.
- After the Aggies scored the first basket of the quarter, the Blue Hens quickly tied the game at 18-18 with a layup from Ande'a Cherisier and a Boone triple.
- With neither side able to gain a lead larger than two points, Sundback would open the Blue Hen lead to 27-23 with a three-pointer. The run sparked a 14-8 run to end the quarter.
- Delaware shot 70.6 percent from the field (12-of-17) and 80 percent from downtown (4-of-5).
- Scoring woes plagued both teams as the Blue Hens struggled to score the majority of the period leaving the Aggies to outscore Delaware 14-3 to regain the lead for good.
- The Aggies would lead by as much as 59-51 with less than four minutes to play.
- The Blue Hens would make a late push scoring the game's next five points off Nakiyah Mays-Prince connecting from deep and a Wilson layup to cut the lead down to three.
- Delaware eventually got the lead down to 63-62 thanks to Demeke draining one from three with five seconds left.
- However, after two Aggies free throws, a Boone game-tying three-pointer would settle the 65-62 heartbreaking final.
- Jordyn Dorsey paced A&T with 17 points, six rebounds and three assists. D'Mya Tucker followed with 15 points and four rebounds while Maleia Bracone chipped in 14 points and five steals.
- This was the third meeting between both squads since A&T joined the CAA and this is Delaware's first loss to the Aggies.
- This is the third straight game the Blue Hens suffered a setback after heading into halftime with the lead. The last time it was against William & Mary was on Jan. 19, 2024.
- This is the first time during head coach Sarah Jenkin's tenure that her program saw a three-game losing streak in conference play.
- This will be the lone regular-season meeting between the Blue Hens and the Aggies.
