Women’s Basketball Comes Up Short Against Northeastern

NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware women's basketball team returned to the First State ready to open its two-game home stretch. In front of 1,288 fans inside the Bob Carpenter Center, the Blue Hens (6-12, 2-4 CAA) started a fourth-quarter comeback and was able to trim the double-digit deficit to six points but came short falling 73-66 to Northeastern (7-9, 3-3 CAA). With the setback, the Blue Hens and the Huskies split the regular-season series.
HEN HIGHLIGHTS
First Quarter: Northeastern 22, Delaware 11
The Blue Hens will close out its two-game homestand Sunday afternoon against Towson inside Bob Carpenter Center. Opening tip is scheduled for 2 p.m. will be broadcast simultaneously on NBC Philadelphia and FloHoops.
HEN HIGHLIGHTS
- The Blue Hens were led by Ande'a Cherisier, who had a career-high 14 points (6-of-9 FG, 2-of-2 FT), grabbed three rebounds, and had two steals and two blocks.
- Cherisier was one of three Blue Hens in double figures along with Chloe Wilson (13 points, 4-of-5 FG, 5-of-6 FT) and Darrionna Howard (11 points, 5-of-5 FG). Howard led the team in rebounds with five.
- Sydney Boone led the Blue Hens in assists with three.
- Delaware finished the afternoon shooting 46.2 percent (24-52) from the field, 25.0 percent (4-16) from three-point territory and a perfect 82.4 percent (14-17) from the free-throw line.
- The Blue Hens had 27 rebounds, compared to Northeastern's 28 and scored 11 second-chance points off of nine. offensive rebounds.
- The Blue & Gold also finished the day with nine assists, three blocks, 11 steals, four fastbreak points, 36 bench points and scored 26 points off of 18 Huskies turnovers.
First Quarter: Northeastern 22, Delaware 11
- 25 seconds into the opening quarter, Boone found a rolling Klarke Sconiers to give Delaware the early 2-0 lead.
- The Blue Hens will hold a narrow one-point lead, 4-3, at the 8:03 mark, thanks to Wilson's layup.
- Northeastern would respond with a 19-7 run to close the quarter and take the commanding 22-11 lead.
- The Blue Hens were able to pull within seven points courtesy of a pair of Rebecca Demeke freebies at the 6:07 mark, 28-21.
- The Huskies remained in control and rebuilt its double-digit lead after using an 18-6 scoring spurt to take the 19-point lead, 46-27, into the break
- Northeastern was still in the driver's seat and watched its lead balloon to a quarter-high 26 points, 63-37, with 1:51 left.
- Howard finished a three-point play to send the 63-40 game into the final quarter.
- Howard's basket at the end of the third quarter sparked a major 17-Blue Hen 2 run in the final frame to make it a 65-57 with 5:27 to play.
- The fourth quarter run was started with a pair of Cherisier free throws.
- Nakiyah Mays-Prince, Grace Sundback, and Wilson each contributed points during the run.
- The Huskies regained momentum thanks to an and-one basket from Derin Erdogan with five minutes to play.
- Delaware stayed within single digits and would cut the Huskies lead to as little six (72-66).
- However, Northeastern's lead would prove to be too much down the stretch and the Blue Hens comeback would fall short.
- Erdogan paced Northeastern with 15 points, seven assists and four rebounds. Deja Bristol followed with 14 points and five rebounds while Gemima Motema chipped in with 13 points and two rebounds. Yirsy Queliz rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points.
- This was the 67th all-time meeting, 60th meeting in conference play and the second time head coaches Sarah Jenkins and Priscilla Edwards-Llyod have met.
- The Blue Hens now hold the 48-19 all-time record while sporting a 24-5 mark in Newark.
- The Blue & Gold are now on a four-game skid.
