Men’s Basketball Routs Hampton, 80-53

NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware men's basketball team routed Hampton, 80-53, Thursday night at the Bob Carpenter Center as the Blue Hens captured their first CAA win of 2024. Hampton's 53 points are the fewest allowed by the Blue & Gold this season.
Delaware moves to 9-5 overall and 1-0 in CAA play, while Hampton drops to 4-10, 0-2 CAA.

- Niels Lane put up a season-high 15 points on 6-of-7 from the field, including 1-for-1 from long range.
- Jyáre Davis tallied 17 points, marking his eighth-straight game with at least 17.
- Jalun Trent and Gerald Drumgoole Jr. added 13 and 14 points, respectively. Drumgoole Jr. also corralled eight rebounds.
- Christian Ray brought down 13 boards.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Pirates began Thursday night's scoring on a Kyrese Mullen layup, but the Blue Hens quickly took over as Delaware went on a 24-4 run to hold a 24-6 lead by the 11:56 mark. Lane put up 11 for the Hens on 5-of-6 from the field in only eight minutes. By the 9:37 mark, the Hens extended their lead to 22 on a fastbreak layup from Wes Peterson Jr. to make it a 32-10 game. Delaware's lead ballooned to 24 with 6:01 left before the break, but the Pirates cut it to a 16-point game before the half. UD took a 41-25 lead into the locker room.
- Lane opened the second half with a thunderous dunk on a full court heave from Ray, but the Pirates went on an 8-0 run to trim the margin to a 10, 43-33 in Delaware's favor. After the second media timeout of the half, Delaware went on its own 7-0 run to push the gap to 50-33 with 13:46 remaining. After their 8-0 run, the Pirates went 1-for-11 from the field and without a field goal from Mullen's layup at 13:28 to Jordan Nesbitt's layup at 7:28. After a quick 8-1 advantage, the Blue Hens took a 73-42 lead and cruised to its first CAA win of the season.
GAME NOTES
- Thursday was the third time this season the Hens held their opponent to 25 points or less in the first half.
- This was the second time this season Delaware held a 30+ point lead.
- Delaware improved to 7-2 when leading at the half; 9-0 when leading with 2:00 left, and 8-0 when allowing less than 70 points.
- This was UD's third-straight game with 80 or more points.
- The Blue & Gold held the Pirates to three opponent lows this season as Hampton only scored 53 points on 18 field goals and finished with a 31-percent field-goal percentage.
- This was Delaware's first win at home since defeating Air Force 65-57 on Nov. 12.
