Trio of Double-Digit Scorers Leads Women’s Basketball to CAA-Opening Win Over Northeastern, 86-73

HEN HIGHLIGHTSI have two words for you, Michelle Ojo!", head coach Sarah Jenkins exclaims. "It feels good to be in the win column, I am very proud of our kids' resilience. We have had a tough week in not having some key players here but they did a really good job of staying together. The big topic for us was how do we handle adversity and how are we going to manage when things around going our way. Wilson was phenomenal for us tonight with a double-double; Sydney Boone with 16 points and Ojo was very clutch for us tonight in the fourth quarter. I am proud of everybody, it feels great to be back in the win column.
- Wilson led the way with a new season-high of 21 points off 6-of-10 shooting from the field, including a 3-of-5 clip from long range, marking just the fourth time in her career, and second time this season she made three 3-point baskets. She added 10 rebounds to her stat line to post her third double-double on the season, 14th of her career.
- Along with Wilson, Ojo tied her career high with 15 points off 4-of-6 shooting from the field and added seven points from the charity stripe. The last time she scored 15 points was against VCU back on Nov. 15, 2022.
- Boone was the third Blue Hen in double figures with 16 points off 5-of-14 shooting from the field. It is the ninth time this season Boone was in double figures.
- Delaware finished the evening shooting 43.9 percent from the field (25-57), 34.6 percent from beyond the arc (9-26) and 90.0 percent from the free-throw line (27-30).
- The Blue Hens out-rebounded the Huskies, 40-28, including pulling down 17 offensive boards to score 11 second-chance points.
- Delaware finished with 18 assists, eight steals, three blocks, 28 points in the paint, 16 fast break points, 37 bench points and scored 22 points off of 16 Huskies miscues.
First Quarter: Delaware 18, Northeastern 15
- Delaware opened the game's scoring with three-straight points coming off the hands of Wilson and Mia Yanogacio.
- Both teams started a seesaw battle for the advantage where Northeastern held the brief two point lead, 6-4, with 5:45 remaining.
- Things started to go the way of the Blue and Gold where a pair of Klarke Sconiers' free-throws at the 4:57 mark kickstarted an 11-5 run to take the 15-11 lead with 44 seconds left.
- The Huskies would then score four of the final seven points to pull within three heading into the second quarter, 18-15.
- The Blue Hens started the second quarter with a 9-1 run to take a 27-16 point lead with 7:50 left before halftime.
- Rebecca Demeke started the run with a 3-pointer. Ojo scored her first basket of the season to give the Blue Hens a 31-21 lead with 5:30 left to play.
- Following Ojo's basket, the Huskies ended the half on a 12-4 run, giving the Blue Hens a two point lead at the break, 35-33.
- Delaware remained in the driver's seat to open the third quarter with five straight points from a Wilson three-pointer and Boone layup.
- Northeastern responded with five unanswered points of their own to cut Delaware's lead back to two points.
- Both teams would go back and forth for the rest of the quarter but the Blue Hens would never give up the lead.
- The Blue Hens led by as much as 50-42 with less than four minutes in the quarter, and as little as 53-51 with more than a minute left.
- Delaware finished the quarter with a Boone layup, to give them a 57-52 lead.
- The Huskies continued to keep it close for the first half of the fourth quarter, whittling Delaware's lead to 63-61 with 6:44 to play.
- The Blue Hens immediately responded with a commanding 10-0 run to retake a double digit lead.
- The run was started by a Darrionna Howard and-1 basket and finished with a Demeke 3-pointer to give Delaware a 73-61 lead.
- The Huskies would not come within 10 points of the Blue Hen lead for the remainder of the game.
- Season-high alert: The Blue Hens 86 points is a new season high, surpassing their last season high of 81 against Longwood in the season opener back on Nov. 9. Delaware also dished out 18 assists and made 27 free throws
- Friday's game marked freshman Grace Sundback's collegiate start/debut where she finished with four points, two rebounds and one steal in 26 minutes of action.
- The win is Coach Jenkins' first conference-opening win (1-1).
- The Blue Hens snapped a five-game losing streak as the Huskies losing streak extends to six games.
- The next time Delaware and Northeastern will meet this season is later this month on Jan. 26 in Newark, Del. inside Bob Carpenter Center. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m.
The Blue Hens return to the First State Sunday, Jan. 7 and will welcome Hampton inside Bob Carpenter Center. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m. and will be broadcast simultaneously on FloHoops and Delmarva Sports Network.
