Women’s Basketball Storms Past Hampton, 76-61

NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware women's basketball team returned to the First State for a Sunday CAA matinee with the visiting Hampton inside Bob Carpenter Center. The Blue Hens (6-8, 2-0 CAA) continued its winning ways and captured the 76-61 victory over the Pirates (0-12, 0-2 CAA) in front of the adoring 1,151 fans. With the win, Delaware has now won two-straight games while Hampton's losing streak is extended to 12 games.

HEN HIGHLIGHTS[Question about nine minute scoring drought during the third quarter] One of the focus that we have with this group is how do we handle adversity and how do we respond to it", said head coach Sarah Jenkins. "I am very proud of our kids and how they responded when we were in a tough moment. I am very proud of Chloe Wilson, she got us started early, but I am thrilled about Rebecca Demeke because I am on her everyday. And she came out here today and she sparked us on the defensive end and really got us going.
- For the second straight game, Delaware was led by Chloe Wilson, who had 16 points off 6-of-10 shooting from the field, and grabbed five rebounds.
- Wilson was one of four Blue Hens, along with Sydney Boone (14), Demeke (12) and Nakiyah Mays-Prince (11) scoring in double figures.
- Klarke Sconiers led the Blue Hens in rebounds with eight.
- Tara Cousins, Boone and Mays-Prince led in assists with four.
- Delaware finished the afternoon shooting 44 percent (29-66) from the field, 29 percent (6-21) from beyond the arc, and 67 percent (12-of-18) from the free throw line.
- The Blue Hens were dominant on the boards, grabbing 41 rebounds, and scoring seven second-chance points off of nine offensive boards.
- The Blue & Gold finished the day with 17 assists, 28 points in the paint, 25 fast break points, 31 bench points and scored 28 points off of 25 Hampton miscues.
First Quarter: Delaware 19, Hampton 17
- Delaware broke the scoring ice at the 8:24 and Wilson brought the same energy from Friday night's game into the Bob, being responsible for five of the Blue Hens six points, 6-2.
- Hampton would respond by scoring five unanswered points to take the brief 7-6 lead with 5:11 remaining.
- After a Wilson free throw made it a 9-all game, both teams battled for the advantage over the final 3:25 with Delaware taking the 19-17 lead into the second quarter.
- Hampton's Camryn Hill drilled in a jumper 13 seconds into the second quarter to tie the game at 19.
- Then the Blue Hens put their foot on the gas as Cousins' three-point play kickstarted a 15-4 run capped by a Mays-Prince layup to build the quarter-high 11 point lead, 34-23.
- The Pirates wouldn't go down without a fight, scoring eight-straight to send the three-point deficit into the break, 34-31.
- Hampton turned the tide opening the second half by putting together a useful 10-0 run over 4:22 earning the 41-34 lead.
- The Blue Hens remembered who they were and over the remaining 5:02 a Mays-Prince freebie ignited a dominating 22-5 spurt to head into the final quarter up by nine, 55-46.
- After Hampton cut the Delaware lead down to 60-54, the Blue Hens went on a 12-2 run to increase their lead to a game-high 16 points, 72-56, headlined by four different Blue Hens scoring on the run in Wilson, Boone, Demeke and Mays-Prince.
- The Blue Hens would maintain the double-digit lead throughout the fourth settling the 76-61 final.
- Season-high alert: As a unit, the Blue Hens nabbed 15 steals.
- Needing just three points, Sconiers would score 500 points as a Blue Hen with a three-point play at the 2:20 mark in the third quarter.
- This is the lone regular-season meeting between the Blue Hens and the Pirates.
- Sunday was the first time the Blue Hens have ever defeated Hampton in program history in three meetings.
- This is Coach Jenkins' first CAA home opening win since taking the reign of the program (1-1).
- This is Delaware's first home win this season since the home opener against Longwood on Nov. 9, 2023.
