Nguyen Earns CAA Co-Defensive Player of the Week

RICHMOND, Va. - University of Delaware volleyball's Cadence Nguyen was named CAA Co-Defensive Player of the Week after helping Delaware to a weekend road sweep of Hampton, the conference announced on Monday, Nov. 11, 2024.
Nguyen was second in the conference in digs per set at 5.50, recording 33 in six sets. Nguyen's defensive efforts helped lead Delaware to a CAA-best .096 opponent hitting percentage, as the Blue Hens held Hampton to percentages of .037 and .143 on Saturday and Sunday. She had 16 digs in Saturday's win and then 17 in Sunday's win.Â
Now in her junior season, Nguyen has taken over as Delaware's main libero. She has recorded 3.50 digs per set this year, and has been even better in conference only matches at 3.86 - ninth in the CAA. Nguyen has been key to Delaware's current eight-match win streak that has pulled them into a four-way tie for first place in the CAA entering the final week, as she has averaged 4.07 digs per set over that span and 4.19 digs over her last 10 matches.Â
Delaware has won three consecutive Defensive Player of the Week honors in a row, with Kirah Johnson being named outright two weeks ago and Co-Player last week. Delaware is the first team to have a player named Defensive Player of the Week in three straight weeks since Charleston in Sept. and Oct. 2022. Nguyen is also UD's first libero to win Defensive Player of the Week since Andie Hanus on Sept. 30, 2019. Delaware has also won three Defensive Player of the Week honors in a season for the first time since 2013.Â
The Blue Hens are home for the final weekend of the regular season against Elon, where it will vie for at least a share of a CAA Regular Season Championship.Â
