Pair of Double-Doubles Leads Women’s Basketball Past Evansville, 65-54

NEW ORLEANS – The University of Delaware women's basketball team wrapped up the 2024 Big Easy Classic - Fleur de Lis Tournament with a commanding victory over Evansville on Saturday evening at the Alario Center in Westwego, La. The Blue Hens (2-5) held a double-digit lead for over 34 minutes to secure a 65-54 win, snapping a two-game losing streak and improving their record. Evansville fell to 2-5 on the season.
HEN HIGHLIGHTS
First Quarter: Delaware 23, Evansville 6
The Blue Hens return to the First State next Saturday, Dec. 7, to host in-state rival Delaware State inside Bob Carpenter Center. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m., with the game broadcast live on FloCollege.

HEN HIGHLIGHTS
- Chloe Wilson delivered her second double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds, marking the 17th double-double of her career.
- Ande'a Cherisier recorded her first career double-double, contributing 13 points and 11 rebounds, including five on the offensive end.
- Ella Wanzer and Jiya Perry each added 11 points while combining for eight rebounds and six steals.
- Off the bench, Arantxa Portalez impressed with a career-best outing of seven points and six rebounds in just 15 minutes. Tara Cousins dished out a game-high five assists.
First Quarter: Delaware 23, Evansville 6
- Evansville scored first, taking a 2-0 lead 30 seconds into the game. However, Delaware quickly responded.
- Wilson sank two free throws at the 9:06 mark, igniting a dominant 23-4 run.
- The quarter's highlight came with Portalez finishing a feed from Perry, extending the lead to 18 points with 1:25 remaining.
- The Blue Hens maintained their momentum, keeping a double-digit lead throughout the period.
- Evansville cut the deficit to 17 points with 2:26 left, but Delaware answered with a 6-0 spurt, capped by Portalez's driving layup at 1:24 to push the lead to a game-high 23 points.
- Avery Kelley hit a jumper with four seconds on the clock, sending the Blue Hens into halftime with a 21-point advantage.
- Delaware controlled the third quarter, keeping Evansville at bay.
- The Purple Aces could get no closer than 16 points.
- Cherisier and Perry combined to score Delaware's final five points of the period, ensuring a 19-point lead heading into the fourth.
- Evansville attempted a late rally but never got closer than 12 points.
- Wanzer and Alieghya Bartholomew each hit two free throws, extending the Blue Hens' lead to 16 points with 47 seconds remaining.
- Evansville scored the final five points from the free-throw line to settle the final margin.
- This matchup marked the first-ever meeting between Delaware and Evansville. The Blue Hens now lead the all-time series 1-0.
