Hot Offense, Lockdown Defense Leads Men’s Basketball to 88-53 Beatdown of William & Mary

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – With a red-hot offense and lockdown defense, the University of Delaware men's basketball team ran past William & Mary Thursday night, 88-53. The Blue Hens advance to 13-9 overall and 5-4 in league play, while the Tribe drop to 8-14, 3-6 CAA.

HEN HIGHLIGHTS
- Delaware shot 59.6 percent from the field and 40-percent from beyond the arc.
- Five Hens finished with double-digit point totals, led by 17 from Christian Ray. He added nine rebounds and went 8-for-10 from the field.
- Cavan Reilly (16), Gerald Drumgoole Jr. (16), Jyáre Davis (13), and Niels Lane (12) rounded out the double-digit brigade.
- Davis also added eight rebounds to his line.
- The first half saw the Delaware defense force eight first-half turnovers and just eight field goals.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- With the hosts up 6-5, Delaware ripped off a 9-0 run over a 2:16 span to force a Tribe timeout with 15:24 with the Hens up 13-6. Delaware held William & Mary scoreless for 2:40 during that span. UD would hold its opponent to 1 of its last 10 heading into the media stoppage at 11:54 with the Blue & Gold up 17-9. An 11-5 advantage for the home team made it a two-point game at 22-20, but the Hens registered five unanswered into the stoppage at 6:24 to go up 27-20. Delaware outscored the Tribe 12-4 the rest of the way and held W&M to just 1 of its last 10 heading into the locker room.
- The home team battled to a 7-2 margin to begin the second half before the Hens tallied seven-unanswered to force a timeout, up 48-31. After trading baskets for a bit, Delaware ripped off a 23-4 spurt over 6:55 to force the final Tribe timeout with the Hens up, 77-46 with 4:17 remaining. The Tribe finished the game with a 7-4 advantage but the damage was already done.
GAME NOTES
- Delaware moves to 5-0 on Thursdays this season.
- UD's 60.7 first-half field goal percentage was more than double the Tribe's 27.6 percent.
- The Hens 33-point lead is their second largest of the season.
- Reilly tied his career high with four steals.
- Ray is now 12 points and 19 rebounds away from reaching 1,000 in each category, respectively.
