Offense Explodes In Final Game Of Runnin' Bulldog Classic To Lead Softball To 9-5 Win Over Youngstown State

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - University of Delaware softball scored seven runs in the first three innings to cap off the Runnin' Bulldog Classic with a 9-5 victory over Youngstown State. Delaware won two of their final three games of the weekend, including handing Youngstown State their first loss of the season.

HEN HIGHLIGHTS

Emily Winburn earned her second win of the season by pitching five innings and allowed zero walks.
Morgan Hess earned the save by pitching two shutout innings.
Sydney Shaffer went 4-for-4 with four RBIs.
Julz Garber went 3-for-4 with three RBIs.
Katie Scheivert had two hits and three runs scored.
Jenna Giattino worked two walks.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Winburn pitched a perfect top of the first inning. After Scheivert singled and advanced to second base on a flyout, Shaffer hit an RBI single to give Delaware a 1-0 lead.
Youngstown State scored two second inning runs to take the lead. Delaware rallied in the bottom half of the inning with six runs, their largest run scoring inning of the season. Garber came up with the bases loaded and hit a two-run double to give Delaware the lead. Scheivert followed with an RBI single and Shaffer doubled home her and Garber. Boyet capped the scoring with an RBI double to score Shaffer and put Delaware up 7-2.
WInburn pitched a perfect third inning. After Giattino's second walk in the bottom half of the third, Garber singled her home to put Delaware up 8-2.
Winburn pitched another perfect inning in the fourth.
Youngstown State cut Delaware's lead in half with a three-run top of the fifth inning.
In the top of the sixth, the Penguins put the first two runners on after two walks. Hess came in to get Delaware out of the jam with flyouts to all three outfielders.
Shaffer picked up her fourth hit and RBI of the game in the bottom of the sixth to give Delaware an insurance run. After a single and a stolen base by Scheivert, Shaffer singled her home to put Delaware up 9-5.
Hess slammed the door in the bottom of the seventh to seal the win. Blantz doubled up a runner on second base after catching a line drive for the final out.

GAME NOTES

Winburn recorded her 51st career win. She trails just Carolynn Sloat (63) and Kristi O'Connell (58) on the Delaware all-time career wins leaderboard.
Shaffer had her first four-hit and four-RBI game of her career.
Garber's three RBIs were her most since having a career-high six on April 6, 2022 against Lehigh.
Scheivert recorded her first multi-hit game of the season. She has a stolen base in four of the first five games to begin the season.
Boyet has five RBIs through the first five games of the season.
Hess has allowed just one earned run in her first 12.2 IP to begin her Delaware career. She has allowed just six hits and one earned run with just one walk.
Costaro has a hit in four straight games to begin her career.
