WASHINGTON – Graduate student Mike Robinson and senior JP Ward were named to the 2024 Tewaaraton Award Watch List as two of the top players in college lacrosse and are among the early contenders for the 2024 Tewaaraton Award, the foundation announced Wednesday evening.
The Tewaaraton Award annually honors the top male and female college lacrosse players in the United States. The selection committees are composed of premier college coaches and are appointed annually by the Tewaaraton Foundation.
The lists include the top players across all three divisions of NCAA lacrosse and highlight the early contenders for this year's Tewaaraton Award.
"These student-athletes represent the very best at the collegiate level and have honored the Creator's game with their past play," said Andy Phillips, president of the Tewaaraton Foundation. "We look forward to watching them achieve new heights this season for both themselves and their teammates."
This is the second year in a row Robinson was named to the Watch List. The Peterborough, Ont. native came off a 32-goal season a year ago and opened the 2024 season with a bang, scoring seven times in Delaware's 14-6 win over Lafayette on Feb. 10. Robinson's seven goals earned him the CAA Offensive Player of the week and a spot on the USILA DI Team of the Week. He was also named an Inside Lacrosse Preseason All-America honorable mention and was drafted 28th overall by the Halifax Thunderbirds in September's NLL draft.
Ward, an Owings Mills, Md. native, earned a spot on the Tewaaraton Award Watch List for the first time in his career. Ward was a 2023 All-CAA First Team member and was named to the CAA All-Tournament team. He led the CAA in assists and was second on the Hens in goals and points. Ward was named the 2024 Preseason CAA Co-Player of the Year and like Robinson, was named an Inside Lacrosse Preseason All-America honorable mention. In Delaware's season-opener, he scored twice and tallied three assists, inching closer to the 100-goal and 100-point club.
Watch List additions will be announced on March 7 and March 28, before the field will be narrowed to 25 men's and 25 women's nominees on April 18. Nominees can be players from the Watch Lists or not from the Watch Lists, effectively allowing for a third round of additions.
Five men's and five women's finalists will be announced in early May. The Tewaaraton Award recipients will be chosen after the conclusion of the collegiate lacrosse season.
