NEWARK, Del. - University of Delaware softball split a doubleheader with Maine on Friday, March 1 to begin the Blue Hen Invitational. Delaware won the second game 7-0 after falling in game one, 5-4.

HEN HIGHLIGHTS GAME ONE

Morgan Hess went 2-for-3 with a walk, a run scored, pitched three innings, and allowed just one hit and one with four strikeouts.
Julia Boyet and Maddie Fife both went 1-for-3 with two RBIs.
Sydney Shaffer walked three times.

HEN HIGHLIGHTS GAME TWO

Hess went 2-for-3 with a run scored and was the winning pitcher. She threw 6.1 innings, allowed just four hits and two walks and struck out nine.
Boyet went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, one walk, and one RBI.
Katie Scheivert wet 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.
Veronica Diomede went 1-for-2.
Costaro went 1-for-3 with an RBI, run, and walk.
Maddie Fife went 1-for-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME ONE

Maine scored three first-inning runs.
Emily Winburn pitched a perfect third inning with two groundouts and struck out two to end a perfect fourth inning.
Delaware got two runs back in the fourth. Hess, Scheivert, and Luzon all singled to load the bases. Fife hit a two-run single to score Hess and Scheivert to cut the lead to 3-2.
Maine got a run back in the top of the fifth.
Delaware strung together another rally in the bottom of the sixth. After Fife reached on an error and walks by Garber and Shaffer loaded the bases, Boyet tied the game with two outs on a two-run single to right field.
Maine retook the lead in the seventh.
Fife worked a walk in the bottom of the seventh but Delaware was unable to bring her around.

HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME TWO

Delaware's bats came alive in the bottom of the first, with Garber and Blantz both reaching to begin the game. Costaro doubled both of them out to put Delaware up early. Boyet doubled home Costaro, and Scheivert hit an RBI single to score her to give Hess, the starting pitcher, a 4-0 lead.
Hess struck out three in a scoreless second and allowed just a walk in the third.
Delaware added a run in the fifth. Hess hit a leadoff double and came around to score on an error after a Diomede bunt single.
Hess struck out one in the fourth and escaped trouble in the fifth by stranding two runners on with a strikeout.
The Blue Hens scored two more in the seventh. Scheivert hit an RBI triple to score Boyet, and Ryleigh Thomas scored her with a pinch-hit RBI double.
Hess ended a perfect sixth inning with a strikeout. She got the first out in the seventh on a strikeout before handing the ball to Graceyn Frost.
Frost recorded two groundouts to close out the game.

GAMES NOTES

Boyet has hit in seven straight games and an RBI in seven of her last eight games.
Hess' nine strikeouts pitching were a season-high.
Blantz hit her 10th double of the season during the second game.
Shaffer's three walks in game one were a career-best in a game and the most by a Delaware player this season.
Scheivert's triple in game two was the first triple of her career.
Luzon is 4-for-7 as a pinch hitter this season.
Diomede's bunt single was the first hit of her collegiate career.
