Men's Lacrosse Falls 13-8 to Michigan in Rain Soaked Battle in Delaware Stadium

NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware men's lacrosse team fell 13-8 to No. 11/13-ranked Michigan Saturday afternoon in front of a crowd of 1558 on a rainy Saturday afternoon. The Blue Hens fall to 2-2 on the year while the Wolverines improve to 5-1.
HENS HIGHLIGHTS
- JP Ward recorded his second hat trick of the year, scoring all three of his goals in the first quarter.
- Nick Jessen and Matt Acchione tallied two goals apiece.
- Mike Robinson had a season-high three assists with Brendan Powers and Jessen each tallying one.
- Freshman defender Louie Atkinson and faceoff man Logan Premtaj each had two caused turnovers.
- In goal, Kevin Ellington recorded nine saves on the day.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The game remained scoreless until halfway through the first quarter when Michigan's Michael Boehm put the Wolverines on the board at the 7:24 mark. With 3:55 left in the first, freshman Tyler Owings knotted the game at one apiece and by the 2:38 stamp, Ward put the Hens ahead 3-1 after two quick goals. The Michigan offense responded with a goal from Justin Tiernan, but UD held a 3-2 lead after the opening quarter.
- In the second, Ward extended Delaware's lead to two, 4-2, but the Wolverines quickly tied the game at 4-4 with 9:07 left until the break. Back-to-back goals from Tiernan and Ryan Cohen put Michigan ahead 6-4 and despite a man-up goal from Acchione, the Wolverines took a 6-5 lead into the locker room.
- Michigan wasted no time coming out of the break as the Wolverines put up three goals in less than three minutes into the second half to take a 9-5 advantage. The Hens answered back with two goals from Jessen, but Michigan took an 11-7 lead into the fourth.
- In the fourth, Acchione put Delaware within three, 11-8, with his second man-up opportunity of the game, but two late Michigan goals put the game on ice for the Wolverines.
GAME NOTES
- Saturday's contest was Acchione's first multi-goal performance of the year.
- Owings made his first-career start.
UP NEXT
Delaware heads to West Long Branch, N.J. on Saturday, March 9 for its first CAA contest of the season as the Blue Hens take on the Monmouth Hawks. Game time is set for 11 a.m.
