RICHMOND, Va. – For the second consecutive week, the University of Delaware men's lacrosse team garnered two of this week's CAA weekly honors as JP Ward was named the league's Co-Offensive Player of Week and Kevin Ellington was named the Defensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday afternoon.
Ward, a senior from Owings Mills, Md. earned the weekly honor after a career-day against Stony Brook on Saturday. The senior tied a season-high with seven points on two goals and five assists. Ward's first assist of the day gave him 100 for his career, making him the third Blue Hen with both 100-career goals and assists. With his assist on the game's opening goal, Ward extended his points streak to 46 games in a row.
This is the third time in his career Ward has been named Offensive Player of the Week, but the first time sharing the honor as Towson's Nick DeMaio was named a Co-Offensive Player of the Week with Ward after a five-goal performance against Hampton.
For the second week in a row, goaltender Kevin Ellington earned the league's weekly top defensive honor after making a career-high 21 saves on 43 shots faced, posting a .636 save percentage between the pipes in Delaware's 16-12 victory over Stony Brook on Saturday. The senior's 21 saves match the most in a game by a CAA student-athlete this season and are the fifth-most in the NCAA. Ellington limited the Seawolves to just one goal in the first half, making seven saves. He faced 33 shots in the second half and turned away 14 to preserve the win for the Blue Hens. It marked his second game this season with 20 saves and fifth with a save percentage of .600 or better.
Ellington now leads the nation in save percentage at .602.
The Blue Hens return to action on Saturday, April 20 as Delaware heads north up I-95 to the City of Brotherly Love for a bout with the Drexel Dragons. Game time is set fior 1 p.m.
