RICHMOND, Va. - University of Delaware's Morgan Hess was named CAA Pitcher of the Week on April 22, 2024 after her performances against Hofstra this past weekend, the conference announced on Monday.Â
Hess went 2-0 while pitching back-to-back shutouts, including a no-hitter on Saturday. She allowed just three hits and held the Pride to a .065 BAA in 14 innings pitched. In Saturday's no-hitter, she struck out three and allowed just two walks in a 1-0 victory. During her second straight shutout on Sunday, she struck out four and allowed just three hits with three walks. Hess also doubled and scored a run on Sunday, helping Delaware to a 4-0 victory. Hess' Pitcher of the Week honor was her first this season and her second CAA weekly honor, as she was named Player of the Week on March 5.Â
Hess' no-hitter was the first of her career and 17th in program history, and first since last May when Emily Winburn no-hit Hampton. Her shutouts were the first two of the season and her fifth complete games of the season, and her 30th of her career. She has now won nine straight decisions as a pitcher. For the season, she has a 2.36 ERA in 106.2 innings pitched and has allowed just 30 walks with 58 strikeouts. She is also 12-4 with one save. At the plate, she is hitting .295/.311/.500 with 14 doubles and three home runs. She ranks second in the conference in doubles, fifth in wins, fifth in BAA, seventh in ERA.
Hess, a transfer from Presbyterian, has helped Delaware to a 33-9 overall record and 18-3 in CAA play, tied for their most conference wins in a single-season all-time. The Blue Hens currently hold a two-game lead over Campbell with six CAA games remaining. Delaware next plays their non-conference finale tomorrow at home against Coppin State in a double header, then travel to Towson this weekend. They host Campbell for the final CAA regular season series of the weekend before heading to the CAA Tournament, hosted by UNCW in Wilmington, N.C.Â
