Daniels, Three Relay Squads Shines as Track & Field Close Out Regular-Season at Historic Penn Relays

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The University of Delaware track & field team headed up I-95 set to compete at the 128th annual Penn Relays, hosted by University of Pennsylvania April 25-27 from Franklin Field in Philadelphia, Pa. Head coach Kenyetta Iyevbele took 15 Blue Hen athletes ready to compete in nine events at the prestigious three-day meet as Sarah Daniels, the 4x200m, SMR and 4x800m relay teams led the charge to put a bow on the outdoor regular-season.

- Kosie Nkwonta opened the Blue Hens' three-day outing competing in the hammer throw as she finished the day throwing 10.18m to place 20th in the event.
- Daniels closed out day one for the Blue & Gold racing in the 3000m steeplechase. She shaved off :01.73 her previous time (10:34.74) and set a new personal-best time of 10:33.01 to finish the race in 18th place.
- Daniels' new time now sits second in school history.
- Nkwonta opened the Blue Hens' day two of competition in the shot put and saw her final throw fly through the air for 13.07 (18th place) to conclude her Penn Relays outing.
- Four relays on deck for the Blue Hens and the 4x100m squad Victoria Henry, Taylor Johnson, Jahnia Hodge and Halima Scott, were set to open the track for the Blue & Gold.
- The relay team clocked a time of 48.27 to finish in 19th place.
- The 4x200m team, Scott, Johnson, Lauren Leath, and Henry, etched their names in the record books after posting a time of 1:41.79 (17th place).
- The time sits ninth overall in school history.
- The javelin throw, the final field event for the Blue Hens, was headlined by the freshman Rachel Schmitt.
- Schmitt's last throw was in the air for 35.89m to conclude her outing.
- The SMR crew of Scott, Johnson, Leath and Kadence Dumas were tasked to chase history.
- The relay team clocked a time of 3:58.54, a time that now sits second in UD history.
- The 4x400m relay team of Alexa Dougherty, Jenna Scandale, Marissa Mauro and Jayde McDermid capped day two for the Blue Hens by posting a time of 4:00.52.
- The lone relay to conclude the Blue Hens outing at the historic Penn Relays was the 4x800m relay team, Leah Clear, Leath, Marissa Dailey and Dumas.
- The squad ran a time of 9:12.90 to finish in 12th place.
- The relay time now sits ninth in school history.
Saturday
- The pole vault vet, Bridget Joyce, was the lone Blue Hen competing at the Covert Classic, hosted by Lehigh University from Goodman Track and Field Complex in Bethlehem, Pa. on Saturday.
- Joyce leaped over the 3.15m bar to finish the event in 13th place.
- Delaware was featured in two championship relays (4x200m, SMR)
- 14 Blue Hens competed at Penn Relays for the first time in their careers, seven being freshmen
- The Blue Hens rewrote the school's history books in four events (3000m steeplechase, 4x200m, SMR, 4x800m)
UP NEXT
The Blue Hens will return to the track to open the postseason schedule at the 2024 CAA Track & Field Outdoor Championship, hosted by Elon. The two-day championships are slated to start May 10-11 from Jerry and Jeanne Robertson Track and Field Complex in Elon, N.C.
