McCurry Nets Five Goals, Ward Scores Hundredth-Career Goal as Men's Lacrosse Tops Fairfield 14-6

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The University of Delaware men's lacrosse team won its fourth straight CAA game as the Blue Hens topped the Fairfield Stags 14-6 improving to 4-0 in CAA action and 6-3 overall while the Stags fell to 5-6 and 2-2 in league play.
HENS HIGHLIGHTS
- Freshman John McCurry led all scorers on the day with his second-career five goal performance.
- JP Ward tallied a hat trick and notched his100th-career goal in the win. He is now just one assist away from 100 for his career.
- Brendan Powers added two goals for his second straight multi-goal game.
- Freshman Ryder Buell and sophomore Michael Straub each recorded their first-career goals.
- Both Matt and Cam Acchione each scored single goals on the day.
- Senior goaltender Kevin Ellington recorded 15 saves for his sixth win of the year.
- At the X, OJ Morris went 7-for-15 on the day for a .466 faceoff percentage against the Stags.
- Joe Speers finished with a team-high four caused turnovers.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Hens fell behind early as the Stags held a 2-0 lead by the 10:38 mark in the first quarter. The Hens' only goal of the quarter was Ward's 100th of his career with 5:13 left in the quarter and Fairfield took a 2-1 lead into the second quarter.
- In the second, the Hens and Stags combined for nine goals in what was a back and forth quarter. McCurry knotted the game at 2-2 with his first of the game at the 13:05 mark, but the Stags quickly answered with a goal from Bryce Ford to retake the lead at 3-2. From the 9:12 mark to the 8:06 mark, the two squads went goal for goal, but FU took a 5-3 lead with 8:06 to go before the break. Once again, McCurry tied the game, now at 5-5, and tallied a first half hat trick with back-to-back goals beginning a string of six unanswered goals from the Blue Hens. With just under a minute to play, Matt Acchione put the Hens on top for the first time with the third straight Delaware goal followed by McCurry's fourth of the half to give UD a 7-5 edge headed to the locker room.
- Just eighteen seconds into the third quarter, Straub barreled down the field and netted his first collegiate goal to extend the Delaware lead to 8-5. At the 12:34 mark, Powers netted his first of the game to make it a 9-5 UD lead. Fairfield's Ford found the back of the Blue Hen net to end the Stags' scoreless streak, but Buell responded with his first goal, beginning another string of five consecutive goals from the Blue & Gold.
- The Hens shut out the Stags in the fourth as Cam Acchione, Ward, and Powers scored the final three Delaware goals, all but sealing UD's 14-6 win.
GAME NOTES
- Ward extended his points streak to 46 straight games.
- Straub's third-quarter goal was the first for a Delaware FOGO this season.
- McCurry has scored at least one goal in five straight games and two or more goals in three straight.
- Saturday's contest was the fifth time the Blue Hens have held opponents to under 10 goals.
UP NEXT
Delaware returns home as the Blue Hens host Stony Brook on April 13 for Senior Day. Game time is set for noon in Delaware Stadium.
