Softball Falls To Campbell In Doubleheader

NEWARK, Del. - University of Delaware softball lost twice in a doubleheader to Campbell, 1-0 and 5-2, on Friday, May 3, 2024. Delaware will be the No. 2 seed in next week's CAA Conference Tournament.Â

HEN HIGHLIGHTS, GAME ONEÂ
- Emily Winburn pitched all seven innings, allowing just four hits, a walk, and picking up two strikeouts She allowed just an unearned run.
- Julia Boyet and Morgan Hess both went 1-for-3, with Hess recording a triple.Â
- Boyet and Chloe Blantz both stole a base.
HEN HIGHLIGHTS, GAME TWOÂ
- Blantz went 2-for-2 with a walk.Â
- Boyet went 1-for-3 with a walk.Â
- Katie Scheivert went 1-for-2.Â
- Jenna Giattino and Olivia Marinucci both had pinch hits, with Marinucci driving in two runs on a double.Â
- Winburn pitched 3.2 relief innings, allowing no hits and an unearned run with two strikeouts.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME ONE
- Campbell began the game with two singles, but Winburn retired the next three hitters to end the threat.Â
- Winburn threw a 1-2-3 second inning and a hitless third. She then stranded a runner at second base in the fourth.
- Campbell scored in the fifth on a pass ball.
- Winburn retired the side in order in the sixth and seventh inning.Hess tripled with two outs in the seventh, but wasn't able to come around to score.
HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME TWO
- Hess started off the first inning with back-to-back strikeouts in a perfect first inning.
- Campbell plated four runs, three earned, in the second.Â
- Hess recorded a strikeout in a scoreless third.Â
- Winburn came on in relief after back-to-back singles in the fourth, and escaped trouble with a double play turned by Blantz.
- Campbell added an unearned run in the fifth.Â
- Campbell only mustered a walk as Winburn threw a scoreless sixth. Winburn then worked around an error in a scoreless seventh.Â
- Delaware's bench began a rally in the seventh in their attempt to comeback. Giattino singled and Kristen Luzon drew a walk as pinch hitters. Graceyn Frost pinch ran for Luzon, and her and Giattino came around to score on a pinch-hit, two-run double by Marinucci. Delaware got the tying run to the plate, but Campbell closed out the game.Â
GAME NOTES
- Winburn pitched her 19th complete game of the season and 55th of her career. She is tied for seventh all-time in single-season complete games in Delaware history. She has complete games in 14 of her last 15 starts.Â
- Winburn has a 1.18 ERA since March 3 and a 0.77 ERA since March 20.Â
- Boyet has a hit in 11 of her last 12 games, and has reached base in 12 consecutive games.Â
- Marinucci's hit was her second of her career and second career double. It was her first hit since Feb. 25, 2023.Â
- Blantz had her 10th multi-hit game of the season.
- Hess' triple was the first of her career.Â
