Winburn Shuts Out Stony Brook In Opening Game Of CAA Tournament

WILMINGTON, N.C. - University of Delaware's Emily Winburn threw a two-hit shutout against No. 3 seeded Stony Brook to lead No. 2 seeded Delaware to a 3-0 win over the Seawolves to begin the CAA Conference Tournament.Â

- Winburn allowed just two hits in all seven innings, allowing no runs and just one walk in six strikeouts.Â
- Julia Boyet went 1-for-3 with a triple and a run scored.
- Julz Garber went 1-for-2 with an RBI and a walk.Â
- Gianna Costaro went 1-for-2 with a run scored and a walk.Â
- Chloe Blantz went 1-for-3 with a run scored.Â
- Morgan Hess went 1-for-3.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Stony Brook had a leadoff single, but Katie Scheivert turned a double play on a lineout to end the top of the first.Â
- With two outs, Boyet hit a triple to center field and scored on a throwing error for the game's first run.Â
- Winburn had two groundouts and a strikeout in a perfect second. Delaware tacked on two runs in the bottom half, as Blantz, Hess, and Costaro all singled to lead off the inning. Maddie Fife scored Blantz on a fielder's choice, then Garber brought in Costaro with a two-out RBI single to put Delaware ahead 3-0.Â
- Winburn was perfect in the third, fourthm, and fifth inning, picking up three more strikeouts.Â
- Winburn retired 16 straight from the first until two outs in the sixth, as Stony Brook threatened after a walk and an infield single, but Delaware escaped the jam,
- Winburn struck out the first two in the seventh and ended the game on a groundout, sealing Delaware's 3-0 win.Â
GAME NOTES
- Winburn pitched her 20th complete game of the season and 56th of her career. She also threw her seventh shutout of the season and 21st of the season.
- Winburn recorded the seventh season in program history with at least 20 complete games, and first since Carolynn Sloat in 2006.
- Winburn also recorded the sixth season in program history with at least seven shutouts, and her second straight season of seven shutouts.
- Winburn has thrown a complete game in 15 of her last 16 starts.Â
- Winburn has a 1.12Â ERA since March 3, a span of 29 appearances, and a 0.72Â ERA since March 20, a span of 22 appearances.Â
- Delaware had a shutout during the CAA Tournament for the first time since May 12, 2022 against Elon, also pitched by Winburn.
- Garber recorded her 60th hit of the season, the 11th season in program history with at least 60 hits and first since Mariah Kondravy in 2017.
- Boyet recorded the 12th season in program history with at least six triples, and first since Leanna Gearhart in 2016.Â
- Boyet has a hit in 12 of her last 13 games, and it hitting .462/.523/.692 over that span, and is hitting .420/.482/.660 since April 9.Â
- Delaware went 4-0 this season against Stony Brook.Â
- Delaware is 9-1 in neutral site games this season, and have won nine straight. It's the second longest active neutral site winning streak in the country, trailing only Oklahoma (45).Â
